Why Don't Coffee Shops Have Iced Flat Whites?
"Iced Flat White" – this is a name that makes baristas cringe when they hear it, because in regular coffee shops, iced flat whites are not on the menu. So when customers mention it, baristas have to explain to them!
So the question arises: why is there almost no option for iced flat white in regular coffee shops?
The Definition of Flat White
Let's start with the definition of flat white! Not only does every coffee shop have a different definition of how to make a flat white, but let's be bolder – every country has a different definition of flat white! I once saw an interesting saying on a social media platform: when you see a flat white option on any coffee shop menu, it becomes a "Schrödinger's flat white" because you never know what kind of flat white the shop will serve you.
The original design of flat white was to create an espresso milk drink more suitable for Australians. Compared to regular espresso drinks, Australians prefer their coffee to be stronger in concentration, which is why they created "Long Black" – the richer version of Americano. Since black coffee has a richer version, milk drinks naturally couldn't be left behind. Some friends might ask: Isn't there already a cappuccino among espresso milk drinks? Why create another flat white?
Cappuccino is a coffee made of one-third espresso, one-third milk, and one-third milk foam. Compared to latte, its coffee flavor is much more intense. However! It has extremely thick milk foam that even overflows the cup by a considerable margin. Australians don't like too much dense, smooth milk foam, so in developing the flat white, they reduced it – it should exist, but not too much! And it must be very smooth! This formed the flat white milk foam we drink today – although thin, it's very silky.
The Meaning Behind "Flat White"
In the original meaning of flat white, "white" refers to milk, while "flat" means level. After pouring the milk foam, unlike cappuccino or latte, it doesn't overflow the cup but remains level with the rim. "A rich milk drink with light foam that sits level with the cup" is the main meaning behind the name flat white.
Does Iced Flat White Really Exist?
So does flat white really have an iced version? The traditional definition of flat white does not include iced preparations, because people who choose to drink flat white are pursuing its unique texture and concentration. If made into an iced drink, its core experience would be greatly diminished.
Iced coffee inevitably lacks the rich aroma and full-bodied texture of hot coffee. For flat whites, which emphasize these two aspects, this is certainly a significant blow. Additionally, some concentration must be sacrificed to replace it with ice to cool the coffee, and even the light milk foam will be lost. At that point, this iced flat white has little difference from a milk-focused iced latte, except for using less milk.
This is why iced flat whites are rarely seen on the market. Although some businesses might list iced flat whites to give customers more options, this coffee drink may have already lost the original meaning of what a flat white should be.

Should You Use Hot Water or Room Temperature Water to Wet Your Filter Paper?
Most coffee enthusiasts wet their filter paper before brewing. This practice serves several purposes: primarily to ensure the filter paper adheres properly to the brewer, preventing hot water from bypassing the coffee grounds and seeping directly into the lower pot; secondly, to reduce the amount of coffee liquid absorbed by the filter paper during the blooming stage; and thirdly, to remove any paper taste from the filter, which is less commonly mentioned today.
