The Origami Dripper Can Use Different Filter Papers - What Are Its Pros and Cons?
The Origami Dripper: Beauty Meets Functionality
The Origami dripper's exceptional design always makes it stand out among coffee drippers. You can see it in different coffee shops and even in world-class competitions.
As we all know, this uniquely shaped dripper can use different filter papers for brewing. So how do different filter papers affect the coffee flavor?
The Origin of the Origami Dripper
This is a special dripper designed by Mr. Yasuo Suzuki. Its angular shape resembles a piece of paper folded multiple times, so Mr. Suzuki named this dripper "Origami" (which means paper folding).
This dripper presents a symmetrical, exquisite conical structure. FrontStreet Coffee counted the creases on the dripper - if it were a circular piece of paper, it would need to be folded forty times to create these twenty creases used for flow guidance.
More Than Just a Decorative Dripper
The Origami dripper is not just a decorative "vase." You'll find that it can actually accommodate both conical filters and flat-bottom filters. This is a rare advantage among other drippers - one dripper, two uses, double the happiness for the price of one!
Wait... it's not actually one price! Since the Origami dripper doesn't have integrated cup handles and base stands, if you choose this dripper, you'll need to spend extra money to purchase a base stand to use with it when you don't have a holder!
Comparison of Different Filter Papers
Since it can use two different types of filter papers, we definitely want to try using the same dripper with different filter papers to see what differences we can brew! Aside from the filter papers, all other parameters remain consistent:
Beans: Colombia Boundary Geisha
Amount: 15g
Ratio: 1:15
Grind: FrontStreet Coffee uses EK43 at setting 10, with 80% pass-through on #20 sieve
Water temperature: 92°C
Brewing method: Standard three-pour method
The final brewing times were:
Conical filter paper - 1 minute 56 seconds
Flat-bottom filter paper - 2 minutes 1 second
The brewing times of the two different filter papers don't seem to have much difference. When using conical filter paper with a V60 dripper, it conforms to the V60's 12 spiral long ribs and 12 short ribs. In the Origami dripper, it conforms to 20 vertical long ribs.
The flat-bottom filter paper doesn't get flat-bottom support in the Origami dripper. This is because the Origami dripper, unlike cake filter cups, doesn't have small holes at the bottom. On the contrary, its bottom has a large open cutout with no base support, so it relies entirely on how well the flat-bottom filter paper adheres to the creases of the Origami dripper walls. The closer to the bottom, the better the adhesion, which also prevents hot water from escaping through the channels.
Tasting Time
The Geisha brewed with conical filter paper shows: bright citrus acidity, elegant chamomile floral notes, smooth mouthfeel, distinct layers - overall, citrus flavors are more prominent.
The Geisha brewed with flat-bottom filter paper shows: elegant chamomile floral notes, gentle citrus acidity, noticeable tea-like quality, overall more balanced mouthfeel.
As you can see, the Origami dripper offers high versatility. You can use different filter papers with various brewing methods to achieve new heights of brewing. It's not difficult to control, making it very suitable for beginners. This is why the Origami dripper has gained such popularity.
The Minor Flaw
As mentioned above, the Origami dripper requires purchasing an additional base holder, which comes in two different styles: wood and resin. Many friends choose the wooden base holder for its aesthetic appeal, but the original wooden stand doesn't have teeth to secure the dripper, so during brewing, it might...
Tilt! So, if you want a better brewing experience, it's better for friends to purchase the resin base holder with teeth.
