Recently, M Stand officially announced the launch of a youtiao (fried dough stick) and shaobing (baked flatbread) coffee combo set – the "Youtiao Croissant" – with a crispy exterior that flakes with every bite. Paired with a cup of coffee, this East-West fusion sounds absolutely delightful! In addition to the original flavor, there's also a "Sausage Youtiao Croissant" and "Beef Shaobing."

Eating youtiao and beef shaobing with coffee at a coffee shop – the domestic coffee market is really getting creative!

As early as February this year, a "Jianbing Guozi Coffee Shop" in Shanghai pushed the topic of Chinese breakfast + coffee to the top of trending searches. It's reported that many netizens were willing to wait in line for over an hour just to get this jianbing + coffee breakfast combo.

At that time, the shop's jianbing + coffee combo was priced at 28 yuan. The jianbing included 2 eggs, with optional ingredients like youtiao, crispy pancakes, and meat floss. As for the coffee paired with the jianbing, it mainly consisted of Americano and latte.

The shop opens at 7 AM every day, perfectly meeting the needs of nearby office workers and students. The owner mentioned that the coffee shop has been open for 7 years, and only started offering the "jianbing + coffee" combination in early February this year. They didn't expect it to become so popular: "We prepare ingredients for about 200 jianbing per day, and sometimes they sell out before noon."

Coffee + Chinese Breakfast Combinations Across China

Following the viral success of "Jianbing Guozi + Coffee" in Shanghai, coffee + Chinese breakfast combinations launched across the country have been very well received, especially those incorporating local特色 breakfast snacks.

In the Ningbo region, there's "coffee + local breakfast「cifan tuan (sticky rice balls), youtiao, scallion pancakes...」"; in the Chaozhou area, there's "wugui (glutinous rice cakes) or yugui (taro cakes) + coffee"; in Kunming, there's "meigan cai kou rou bing (preserved vegetable pork belly cake) + coffee"; in Jingdezhen, there's "youtiao baomaci (youtiao with glutinous rice cake) + coffee"; and in Shantou, "Chaoshan changfen (rice noodle rolls) + coffee."

In Guangzhou, there's even a beef offal shop offering "beef offal rice + coffee" and so on... It seems that not just Chinese breakfast, but even Chinese meals need a cup of coffee to be truly satisfying!

In the past, we always had the impression that coffee and Western baked goods were the more natural pairing. We often see coffee shops offering bread, cake, and coffee as combo sets. But if we think about it in reverse – coffee shops offering Chinese breakfast or Chinese breakfast shops offering coffee – both seem perfectly reasonable as well.

Netizens' "Coffee + Breakfast Pairings"

Today, coffee shops are gradually moving beyond the Western palate's preference for coffee + pastries, and are increasingly turning toward daily, down-to-earth, multi-scenario Chinese breakfast options that better meet the needs of Chinese consumers.

Deep in the subconscious of Chinese people's breakfast culture are soy milk, youtiao, buns, and jianbing, as well as changfen (rice noodle rolls), shaomai (dumplings), and mianxian (noodle soup). When coffee enters daily life and encounters these foods, there's no need to resist – perhaps this is an opportunity for sparks to fly.

Coffee Becoming a Breakfast Staple

In 2021, Ele.me and Koubei Life Network jointly published a report on breakfast situations across China. Among Shanghai residents' breakfast choices, soy milk and coffee ranked in the top two. In the four major regions including East and South China, coffee was listed among the most popular breakfast items.

Compared to afternoon tea, breakfast is a more routine and higher-frequency consumption scenario. This also indirectly illustrates that coffee is gradually making its way into the breakfast world, becoming part of many people's daily lives.
