According to the official Blue Bottle Coffee announcement, their third store in mainland China will still be located in Jing'an District (netizens: Why are they all in Jing'an!). Following Blue Bottle Coffee's first store opened in February this year at the former Yutong Flour Mill Dormitory, this third store is located in Zhang Yuan, known as "the most famous garden in Shanghai."
In recent years, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has hoped that industries and society would make joint efforts to strengthen the protection and utilization of cultural relics. There's a saying that "a house with people living in it doesn't deteriorate easily," as the presence of people helps regulate and maintain the building. Since September last year, Shanghai's Jing'an District has launched protective restoration work on Zhang Yuan.
Whenever Blue Bottle Coffee enters a new region, it integrates with local culture. Currently, both the first and third stores in Shanghai are located in historic buildings, which represents a fusion and tribute to local culture, as well as a form of protection and preservation for these heritage buildings.
Blue Bottle Coffee's Third Shanghai Store
This third store is located in a two-story brick-and-timber structure with clean red brick exterior walls, situated along the street in the Kumen building complex of Zhang Yuan. From every brick, tile, and door window to the mottled traces on the walls of the old building complex, all tell stories of Shanghai's past.
Looking at Blue Bottle Coffee's global store locations, more than half choose buildings with rich stories, emphasizing the integration of the brand with local cultural traditions and environment.
Integration with Local Culture
For example, their Kyoto store in Japan features exposed original roof structures and clay walls, complemented by large glass windows to increase natural light. The floor height was deliberately kept consistent to maintain eye level between employees and customers.
The brand's distinctive spatial style is then integrated, blending seamlessly with the surrounding mountain scenery, allowing every customer to experience the stories brought by the century-old building while feeling the brand's professionalism in every detail.
Beyond location selection, Blue Bottle Coffee also incorporates unique local food items into their menu. For instance, the Shanghai Yutong store offers carefully selected pastry combinations from Shanghai's time-honored brands (Tou Tao Gao, Mung Bean Cake, Mahua), perfectly matching traditional flavors with coffee.
The Kyoto store in Japan offers matcha mint cookies made with local matcha and fresh mint, featuring a special taste and soft texture that can be enjoyed alongside coffee.
Nothing creates a sense of belonging more than touching upon memories.
Allowing consumers to gain a deeper understanding of the brand in familiar environments, spaces filled with memories, and with familiar flavors—Blue Bottle Coffee truly excels at this!
