Heytea Cuts Prices and Wins Over Office Workers

For many office workers, bubble tea is the small daily indulgence that can turn a whole day around. Since the pandemic, rising costs have pushed some tea brands to raise prices, and consumers have grumbled but paid anyway. Then one brand went the other way, and its orders exploded.

Just as workers were resigning themselves to higher bubble tea prices, Heytea broke ranks. As the self-styled rebel of China's new-style tea scene, it lowered prices instead of raising them. Its standard tea menu no longer lists any drink starting with a "3," and on the afternoon of February 24 the company announced it would not raise prices at all this year and would stop launching products priced above 29 yuan. Today, drinks priced between 15 and 25 yuan make up more than half of the Heytea menu.

Media reports say both delivery and in-store orders rose sharply after the price cut. Many stores saw order volumes they could not keep up with, and wait times during peak hours stretched beyond an hour.

Some stores were even unable to take orders through their mini-programs, and on the pickup counters of physical stores, delivery drinks piled up waiting for couriers.

Consumer Reactions to the Price Cut

Some customers welcomed the move. Ms. Yue, a white-collar worker in Shanghai, told a media interview that she loves Heytea's fruit teas and has been buying them more often since the price drop. Others noted that while more than 30 yuan a cup had felt expensive, the current prices are much easier to accept.

Several of Heytea's recently launched drinks are priced just over 20 yuan, and the company says it will keep introducing drinks starting with a "1." To give customers more choice, Heytea has also added two cup sizes to some products: a 500 ml standard cup and a 650 ml large MAX cup.

Quality Concerns Amid the Price Cut

Some netizens threw their support behind the "no price increase" pledge, even declaring their affection for the brand.

Others worried that lower prices would mean smaller portions and lower quality. Heytea responded that the price adjustments are meant to give consumers more choice, and that neither the recipes nor the quality standards have changed.

Some commenters countered that quality had in fact slipped along with the price, pointing to smaller amounts of cheese foam.

The Balance Between Price and Quality

Before the cut, a Heytea drink costing more than 30 yuan was a treat: good, but not something most people could justify every day. Now a cup can be had for ten or twenty yuan, and some options cost as little as 9 yuan.

Lower prices are plainly good for consumers. But customers first fell for this brand because the products were good and the drinks tasted great. If the price comes down and the ingredients no longer match the old standard, the whole exercise is wasted.

Heytea's price cut and the flood of orders that followed show how much people care about this brand. Keeping that affection, however, is far harder than winning it.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

If the conversation about value has you thinking about your own daily cup, FrontStreet Coffee's entry-level specialty beans offer a similar balance of quality and price. For a first step into black coffee, FrontStreet Sun-Dried Huakui and FrontStreet Washed Gedeb Cooperative are the two Ethiopian standouts. Ethiopia is Africa's largest coffee producer and the birthplace of coffee, and its beans are usually named after a region or a cooperative. Huakui, from the Sidamo region, is sun-dried for a tropical profile of berry, floral, jackfruit, melon, and honey. Gedeb is a washed Yirgacheffe, showing the jasmine, lemon acidity, and berry tones that made the region famous.

From Brazil, FrontStreet Cerrado Red Bourbon and FrontStreet Queen Farm are easygoing and affordable. Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer, and its beans tend to be softer, with gentle acidity, good sweetness, and a balanced, smooth cup. The Cerrado daily bean gives classic cream, peanut, and cocoa flavors, while Queen Farm, grown higher and planted with the rare Yellow Bourbon, adds butter, sunflower seed, macadamia, and almond notes with a clear sugarcane sweetness that works both black and with milk.

FrontStreet Indonesia Lintong Mandheling and FrontStreet PWN Golden Mandheling cover the rich, low-acid end, thanks to Sumatra's distinctive wet-hulled process. The Golden Mandheling is hand-sorted three times and machine-sorted once, which lowers the defect rate and gives a cleaner, smoother cup with clearer wood and caramel notes. Colombia Huila, Colombia Sidra, and Colombia Daduqi bring soft florals and gentle fruit acidity, and for a sweeter, honey-processed profile, Costa Rica Blackberry and Costa Rica Mozart offer raisin and blueberry sweetness with osmanthus and rose aromas.

Closer to home, FrontStreet Yunnan Xiaoli comes from Baoshan and is washed for a traditional nut-and-chocolate profile that is soft and balanced, while FrontStreet 2013 Yunnan Typica, planted at 1,300 m and medium-roasted, is cleaner, with hazelnut, dried apricot, black tea, caramel, and ripe plum notes. And for the famous Geisha experience without the rare-estate price, FrontStreet Boquete Geisha from Panama's most representative specialty region is washed and pure in variety, showing the orange-blossom-honey character that made Geisha famous.
