Recently, Blue Bottle Coffee located in Kita-ku, Osaka, has completed its renovation. Unlike other Blue Bottle Coffee stores with their warm, woeful décor, this shop boldly incorporates stimulating blue tones! This allows the café to maintain its cozy atmosphere while providing sensory stimulation through the blue color palette. By using the brand's signature color, the space is vividly defined, enabling customers to discover the coffee brand's colors through various lighting and materials.

The designer responsible for this store mentioned that historically, Chayamachi was famous for its unique Japanese tea culture, which brought people together through tea-drinking traditions. Therefore, they wanted to reinterpret this sense of unity in a modern way and integrate it into the café. Consequently, the café was designed with two distinct sections: blue tones + wood tones & pure blue tones.

First Floor Design

The first floor of the café features warm wood tones as its main theme. Warm-toned wood surrounds the entire first-floor space, while floor-to-ceiling glass windows make full use of natural outdoor light. The stainless steel counter also serves a reflective purpose, allowing the entire first floor to be illuminated by natural light during daytime hours.

In addition to the welcoming natural light and wood tones, the central table on the first floor features special blue glass to express Blue Bottle Coffee's brand identity. Through the strategic placement and angle of this table, guests are guided toward the café's second floor.

The staircase connecting the first and second floors is adorned with a glass chandelier that extends throughout the stairwell. The chandelier features coffee-colored glass spheres, gently inviting guests to explore the upper level. The second floor is a pure blue space that offers a three-dimensional experience, allowing guests to enjoy a cup of coffee while experiencing the sensory stimulation provided by the color blue.

Second Floor Experience

The second floor of the café features sensory-stimulating blue tones. In the atrium area, there's a special section flooded with blue light, surrounded by blue glass walls, blue lighting, and images and music "falling" from the ceiling. When guests sit inside, they experience a unique atmosphere that can alter their perception of time... The benches in the atrium are also made of special materials, with functions that only those sitting there can experience... (We hope friends in Osaka can visit and share your experiences in the comments section!)

One might wonder about the psychological effects of this blue color scheme. While blue has a calming effect on the human psyche, promoting peace and tranquility, could an entirely blue space produce the opposite effect? Since blue has a contracting visual effect, a space surrounded entirely by blue might actually make people feel confined... Additionally, blue can significantly affect appetite (making the coffee in hand seem less appealing...)
