What Coffee Do Coffee Enthusiasts Usually Drink: Twelve Common Coffee Types and Flavor Characteristics
Coffee is an imported product, and everyone drinks it for different reasons. Some are enjoying a sophisticated lifestyle, some rely on caffeine, while others simply love the taste of coffee. FrontStreet Coffee would like to explore which coffee varieties those who truly understand coffee must try.
Pour-over coffee is undoubtedly the most popular coffee brewing method in the world today. Simple coffee equipment and an uncomplicated brewing method can filter out a cup of fragrant and sweet coffee. Especially now that light-roast coffee is dominant, pour-over is the most suitable way to make coffee.
Equipment for pour-over coffee includes: pour-over kettle, filter cup, filter paper, sharing pot, coffee grinder, thermometer, and electronic scale. FrontStreet Coffee has calculated that a decent configuration only costs around 1,500 yuan, allowing you to enjoy delicious coffee, making it the most favored method for coffee connoisseurs.
Of course, those who understand coffee are very particular about coffee beans. Coffee beans used for pour-over are basically single-origin beans, belonging to a very high quality grade. FrontStreet Coffee would like to recommend several popular coffee beans for your reference.
A. FrontStreet Coffee Yirgacheffe Coffee Beans
FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe coffee beans are the entry-level beans for many friends. Among the friends FrontStreet Coffee has met, quite a few started their coffee journey with Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe is a very famous coffee-producing region in Ethiopia. The coffee beans produced here exhibit white floral aromas, citrus acidity, and green tea aftertaste. Many people's evaluation of it is, "I never thought coffee could have such a taste, it's truly eye-opening!"
In FrontStreet Coffee's bean selection, there are three highly representative Yirgacheffe coffee beans: FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Red Cherry, FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Gedeb, and FrontStreet Coffee's Washed Yirgacheffe. FrontStreet Coffee's Red Cherry beans are G1 grade coffee processed using natural methods, with a very sweet taste and berry flavors, offering rich layers. FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Gedeb is high-quality washed Yirgacheffe coffee beans produced by the Gedeb Cooperative, with exceptional cleanliness, bright citrus-like acidity, and subtle floral notes, importantly revealing a honey-like sweetness.
There's also FrontStreet Coffee's Washed Yirgacheffe coffee beans. This is G2 grade, and although its grade is not as high as the previous two, the price is truly excellent. FrontStreet Coffee sells it for only 25 yuan per bag. If you're familiar with Ethiopia's green bean grading system, you'll know that Ethiopia's grades are determined by the number of defects - G1 means no more than 3 defects in 300g of green beans, while G2 means no more than 12 defects in 300g. During the roasting process, the roaster will sort out defective beans both before and after roasting, so the difference between G1 and G2 won't be significant.
B. FrontStreet Coffee Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Coffee Beans
Geisha coffee beans are now very famous, and the most authentic and best-tasting FrontStreet Coffee Geisha beans come from Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda. Why is this so? It's not because Hacienda La Esmeralda is the origin of Geisha, but because this "talent scout" recognized Geisha as the "thoroughbred" it is.
Geisha coffee beans were sampled by botanical experts from Ethiopia's Geisha Mountain in 1931. After passing through Kenya, Tanzania, and Costa Rica, they reached Panama. After being processed separately by Hacienda La Esmeralda, Geisha won the BOP championship in 2004.
Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha product line is divided into Red Label and Green Label. The official name of the Red Label is "Esmeralda Special," translated into Chinese as "Emerald Special Selection." Simply put, the Esmeralda Special series is the highest quality Geisha coffee beans sold by Hacienda La Esmeralda, grown in specific plots at elevations of 1,600-1,800 meters, with each batch scoring over 90 points in cupping. This series typically comes from the two sub-estates of Jaramillo and Cañas Verdes (the Velo de Novia estate has also produced Red Label series, but this estate plot is mainly for exploring commercial feasibility, planting many coffee varieties). It is the best Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda.
The official name of the Green Label is "Private Collection," translated into Chinese as "Private Collection." Do not interpret this bean by its Chinese meaning - it's just a product series name. According to Hacienda La Esmeralda's introduction to this series, it can be roughly understood that unlike the Red Label which emphasizes specific plots, this series emphasizes the signature flavors of Hacienda La Esmeralda's high-altitude Geisha coffee. This series is a blend of batches from various specific plots. (Actually, the Green Label can be roughly understood as a Red Label without plot separation.) Overall, it's a Geisha coffee with excellent cost-performance.
C. FrontStreet Coffee Sherry Coffee Beans
Coffee with alcoholic notes sounds very appealing. One of FrontStreet Coffee's very popular coffee beans is FrontStreet Coffee's Honduras Sherry. These coffee beans are processed using sherry whiskey oak barrels, giving the brewed coffee a rich sherry aroma and vanilla cream flavors. It's a coffee bean with unique characteristics.
D. FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain Coffee Beans
I believe everyone is familiar with the name FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain No. 1. As a representative of high-end coffee beans in the last century, FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain has always maintained high quality. That rich, clean taste with perfect balance between sweet, sour, and bitter makes it no exaggeration to call it the "King of Coffee." To this day, when introducing FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain coffee, FrontStreet Coffee jokingly says, "If you want to know what coffee tastes like, try a cup of Blue Mountain coffee!"
E. FrontStreet Coffee Kenya AA Coffee Beans
The acidity of FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya coffee is very rich and full-bodied. This is inseparable from Kenya's coffee cultivation management level. In terms of coffee varieties, Kenya selected SL28 and SL34 with good flavors through the Scott Laboratory for nationwide cultivation. In processing methods, they use a unique Kenyan 72-hour washed processing. Regular washed processing is at most 36 hours, because if soaked longer, the coffee will develop vinegar-like and musty flavors. However, Kenya's unique washing method actually reveals a rich plum and small tomato acidity in the coffee.
FrontStreet Coffee's Kenya is graded by green bean size, with the highest grade being AA, meaning green beans are 17-18 screen size. The AAtop and AA+ written by some merchants are actually spontaneous descriptions by merchants and do not represent Kenya's national standards. FrontStreet Coffee's best-selling is FrontStreet Coffee's Asalia coffee beans, produced by the Asalia processing factory in the Neri region. The coffee from this processing factory has a distinct small tomato flavor, very representative of Kenyan coffee.
F. FrontStreet Coffee Brazil Queen Estate Yellow Bourbon
Queen Estate has won numerous awards, even winning the Cup of Excellence championship in 2011. The estate mainly grows fine Bourbon coffee varieties, with Yellow Bourbon being Queen Estate's "masterpiece."
If you're a newcomer to freshly ground pour-over coffee, this bean is perfect for practicing brewing. FrontStreet Coffee roasts this bean to a medium roast level. Compared to brewing some light-roast coffee beans, this offers a better experience. It's also very easy to brew a sucrose-like sweetness, while the overall coffee leans toward chocolate and creamy peanut flavors, making it relatively easy for beginners to accept its taste.
The reason FrontStreet Coffee recommends this coffee bean is that it not only works well in pour-over but also performs excellently in moka pots, French presses, and espresso machines, making it undoubtedly the "all-rounder" in terms of value.
G. FrontStreet Coffee Costa Rica Blueberry Gummy
In 2019, FrontStreet Coffee acquired a batch of black honey processed coffee beans from La Minita estate, which received widespread praise. So much so that in 2020, many customers came to ask if they had black honey beans from La Minita estate. And this year, La Minita is back. This year's FrontStreet Coffee Blueberry Gummy is La Minita's strong offering, using anaerobic double honey processing, presenting very intense blueberry gummy and rose floral aromas - distinct and enticing flavors.
This bean is also very friendly for beginners, as you can experience the sweet aroma of blueberries during the brewing process. The only drawback might be the slightly higher price.
H. FrontStreet Coffee Panama Butterfly Coffee Beans
Panama Geisha coffee remains a legend in specialty coffee to this day, and of course, its price is also legendary. The emergence of FrontStreet Coffee's Butterfly allows us to taste Panama Geisha flavors at an affordable price.
FrontStreet Coffee's Butterfly contains 70% Geisha coffee beans, with the remaining 30% being Caturra and Catuai. This coffee bean offers clean and clear floral aromas, with distinct Geisha flavors like citrus and honey. Calling it the king of value would be no exaggeration.
These are the coffees that those who understand coffee will choose. Everyone can refer to them and select pour-over coffee beans that suit their own taste~
