Introduction to the Flavor Profile of Panama Boquete La Esmeralda Special Selection Geisha (also known as "Geisha") Natural Process Coffee Beans
Hacienda La Esmeralda is located in Boquete, Panama. The fertile soil brought by the Baru Volcano, the diverse microclimates of the highlands, and the moisture from two converging oceans make this region home to many renowned coffee origins, truly a dream team in the specialty coffee world. Hacienda La Esmeralda's widespread fame is closely related to the brilliant performance of Geisha variety coffee beans in the past decade. This variety originates from the mountainous region of the same name in Ethiopia. It was initially introduced to Central and South America for its resistance to leaf rust disease, but remained obscure for decades in its new homeland due to low yield per unit, weak root systems, and difficulty in cultivation.

The legend began in 2002 when Daniel Peterson, the third-generation operator of the estate, noticed significant improvements in the flavor of recent harvests. Later, through the then-uncommon micro-batch approach, he identified that the Geisha variety, planted several years earlier at higher altitudes, was the source of these multi-layered aromas. This led to winning the first prize at the Best of Panama competition in 2004 with this special production, kicking off the subsequent Geisha craze.
The Geisha coffee created by Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda is a legend. When tasting it, you'll feel the flavors as if they're taking several turns in your mouth, with rich layers continuously stacking upon each other—it's truly an amazing taste moment. In June 2004, Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha was only $21 per pound. By May 2006, it rose to $50.25. By May 2007, a pound surprisingly reached $130. By May 2010, it commanded a high price of $170 per pound. The continuously climbing prices repeatedly demonstrate its legend and value.
Hacienda La Esmeralda's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
Hacienda La Esmeralda, which brought Geisha to prominence, has built its foundation for brilliance through years of variety improvement combined with high humidity, high-altitude microclimates. While producing high-quality coffee, based on its commitment to protecting the global environment, it has also earned certification and recognition from the Rainforest Alliance.
