Last Updated: 2026/01/27, Many coffee enthusiasts are most familiar with beans from Ethiopia and Kenya, while coffee from Papua New Guinea remains less commonly encountered. FrontStreet Coffee has consistently sold coffee beans from this lesser-known growing region, with some people even mistaking it for an African country. Discover why for several years, Papua New Guinea coffee has maintained its place on FrontStreet Coffee's bean list.

Most people are accustomed to drinking coffee beans from Ethiopia and Kenya, but those from Papua New Guinea remain relatively unfamiliar. FrontStreet Coffee has consistently offered coffee beans from this lesser-known origin, leading some to mistakenly believe it's an African country. So why has Papua New Guinea maintained its place on FrontStreet Coffee's bean list for years?

Geography and Economy

Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, with an economy primarily based on agriculture, which accounts for 32% of its domestic economy. Its main exports include minerals and cash crops such as coffee. Numerous small-scale coffee farmers produce "exceptional quality" beans with outstanding flavors, making them highly favored by many overseas buyers.

Distinctive Flavor Profile

Although it borders Indonesia, a major Asian coffee-producing country, FrontStreet Coffee recognizes that Papua New Guinea's coffee is distinctly different from Indonesian varieties. The volcanic soil and rich rainforest environment of the island produce a flavor profile that contrasts sharply with Indonesia's famous Mandheling coffee, which is characterized by herbal and cocoa notes. Instead, Papua New Guinea coffee tends toward the bright, acidic, and fruity floral aromas typical of Central and South American coffee.

Notable Estates

Famous estates include SIGRI Estate in the western Wahgi Valley, KIMEL Estate in the Eastern Highlands, as well as AROKARA, GOROKA, and ARONA estates. The coffee we will be brewing below comes from FrontStreet Coffee's Paradise Bird coffee from the SIGRI Estate.

SIGRI Estate Excellence

SIGRI Estate is situated at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, where the volcanic soil provides excellent drainage and abundant rainfall. The harvesting season runs from April to September each year, with only fully ripe coffee cherries being hand-picked, similar to Ethiopia's Red Cherry Project. This meticulous approach has earned SIGRI Estate coffee beans consistent international recognition for their quality.
