Summer has arrived, bringing hot weather that can easily lead to fatigue. Some friends might want a cup of coffee to refresh themselves, but Americano coffee can be too bitter and difficult to drink. Today, FrontStreet Coffee will teach you how to make a sweet and smooth iced latte.
How to Make Iced Latte Coffee?
First, the composition of iced latte: espresso + milk + ice. Once you know what it's made of, you can complete the required preparations step by step. First, pour ice cubes and milk into the cup, then prepare the espresso.
The coffee machine used by FrontStreet Coffee has a double basket capacity, requiring 20 grams of coffee grounds each time, with a ground-to-liquid extraction ratio of 1:2, meaning 40 grams of coffee liquid extracted within a reasonable time. The extraction time is related to the flow rate of the coffee grounds. Generally, a single extraction is controlled between 20-35 seconds. If it's less than 20 seconds, the coffee flavor tends to be thin and weak; if it exceeds 35 seconds, it's prone to over-extraction, causing the coffee to develop burnt and bitter flavors. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee controls the espresso extraction time within the range of 26-32 seconds.
Before extraction, we need to wipe the portafilter dry, turn on the grinder, grind double portions of coffee grounds, place them on an electronic scale to measure and adjust until reaching 20 grams. Then use a distributor to level the coffee grounds and press firmly downward with a tamper to compact the coffee puck, ensuring more stable coffee extraction.
Then turn on the extraction switch and run water for 1-2 seconds to moisten the brew head while also removing any stuck coffee residue. Place an electronic scale under the cup that will catch the espresso, zero out the weight, and place it under the brew head during extraction. Then gently attach the portafilter to the brew head and pull the extraction switch. When the electronic scale shows that 40g of coffee liquid has been extracted, stop the extraction. Finally, pour it lightly over the ice and milk.
Tips for Better Flavor
Are there any tips to make it taste even better? Yes!
First: Choose the Right Coffee Beans for Espresso
The flavor of coffee beans directly influences the taste profile of iced latte coffee. Most espresso blends will give the iced latte rich nutty, chocolate, and baked bread aromas. FrontStreet Coffee recommends the Classic Espresso Blend and Commercial Blend Coffee. The rich and creamy crema not only enhances the body of the iced latte but also brings out the sweetness of the milk.
The flavor of coffee beans directly influences the taste profile of iced latte coffee. Dark-roasted espresso blend beans will give the iced latte intense nutty, chocolate, caramel notes, and a coffee-forward profile, while medium-roasted beans will give the iced latte a smoother texture.
Second: Proper Milk-to-Coffee Ratio
After choosing good coffee beans, the next step is selecting the right milk. To make a delicious iced latte, FrontStreet Coffee believes it's best to use fresh milk with higher protein content! Then, ensure that milk and coffee liquid fall within a reasonable ratio range.
FrontStreet Coffee's iced latte uses FrontStreet Coffee's Sunflower Warm Sunshine Blend coffee beans and Bright Dairy Fresh Ranch Milk as ingredients, with a ratio of 40g espresso liquid, 150ml fresh milk, and 75g ice cubes. This ratio serves as a reference for everyone, not the golden ratio for latte coffee. FrontStreet Coffee arrived at these parameters through multiple ratio adjustments using the above ingredients, primarily based on actual tasting feedback.
Third: Operational Details
Although the operational method for iced latte coffee—"add ice, pour milk, pour coffee"—is simple and clear, there are still some details to pay attention to. The most important is the espresso extraction. Whether a latte tastes good depends on whether the espresso extraction meets standards. Common espresso extraction issues like channeling and incorrect extraction times naturally affect the taste of iced latte. The process of making iced latte should also be quick. Here, "quick" means the time that ice and milk spend in the cup should be as short as possible, and the extracted espresso should be poured into the cup immediately.
Master these details, and FrontStreet Coffee believes you can easily make a delicious iced latte at home.
