Non-Bitter Coffee Recommendations

When it comes to non-bitter coffee, FrontStreet Coffee's bean selection includes several exceptional options. For instance, Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee offers overall balanced flavors. Similar to Blue Mountain, Paradise Bird Coffee from Papua New Guinea provides comparable characteristics. Other notable mentions include Hawaii KONA Coffee and Costa Rica's Musician Series Coffee—featuring varieties like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven—all of which deliver flavors free from bitterness.

Mandheling Coffee

Sumatra Mandheling grows on the slopes of Mount Leuser, a volcano near the port of Padang in the Aceh Batak region. It is said that the Leuser Range represents one of Earth's oldest and most biologically diverse ecosystems.

This coffee is named to honor the Mandailing people of the Batak region, with the spelling reflecting their preferred orthography.

Sumatra

Indonesia is an archipelago comprising more than 17,000 islands, with Sumatra being the second largest. These islands were formed through volcanic activity, and their mineral-rich soil (abundant in volcanic ash and diverse flora) contributes to making Indonesian coffee among the world's most renowned and distinguished varieties. (Sulawesi and Java, which follow Sumatra in land area, are also spectacular—and perhaps often confused with "Sumatra" in public perception.)

Coffee trees were first brought to Indonesia in the early 19th century by Dutch colonists seeking to break the Arab monopoly on coffee cultivation. Shortly thereafter, Indonesian coffee dominated the world market. However, by the end of that century, disease had completely destroyed the crops. Coffee trees were successfully replanted and quickly regained significant market share until plantations were devastated again during World War II.

For a long time, Indonesian coffee has been highly regarded for its unique cup profile—Mandheling coffee, in particular, features delicate acidity, creamy body, and flavors ranging from chocolate and red fruits to earthy, herbal, umami, and sweet tobacco notes. If described in terms of acidity and bitterness, the bitter characteristics tend to be more prominent.
