How to Make Latte at Home Without a Coffee Machine? Cold Brew Latte Milk Coffee Recipe and Method
Why should cold brew coffee be limited to black coffee only! This article teaches you how to easily make silky smooth cold (milk) brew latte at home without a coffee machine or complex equipment. Let's get started!
The Soul of Milk Brew Coffee:
「Full-bodied texture without the burden」
The charm of low-temperature extracted coffee lies in its ability to effectively reduce the release of heavy molecular weight substances (such as bitterness) from coffee particles. At the same time, due to the long extraction time, light molecular weight flavor substances in coffee particles can be completely released, resulting in cold brew coffee that exhibits overall cleanliness with rich aroma and full-bodied texture.
Milk brew coffee follows the same principle. In daily life, the latte we buy in coffee shops is made by adding milk to espresso extracted through pressurized high-temperature extraction using an espresso machine. The espresso itself inevitably extracts some bitter substances. Although these flavors are diluted after adding milk, some sensitive individuals might find the texture not very pleasant. This is where milk brew coffee can effectively solve this problem.
Of course, because fresh milk is rich in protein and milk fat, these substances further slow down the release of flavor compounds, so the resulting latte concentration isn't as high as machine-made lattes. However, the coffee's aroma and texture are truly excellent! Drinking milk brew coffee gives you a feeling of 「the coffee presenting its best in your mouth, then turning and leaving」 - full-bodied texture without the burden.
How to Make Cold Brew Latte?
For the milk used in making cold brew latte, FrontStreet Coffee recommends choosing fresh milk. Fresh milk has higher lactose and milk fat content, which can enhance the smoothness and full-bodied texture of cold brew latte.
For coffee bean selection, we can choose beans with prominent flavors, such as Ethiopia小花魁 coffee beans/Costa Rica Mozart coffee beans/Honduras Sherry coffee beans, etc. These single-origin coffee beans have relatively soft acidity and overall mellow richness.
Ingredients
This time, FrontStreet Coffee used Honduras barrel-processed Sherry coffee beans. Prepare a clean, dry sealed container, your favorite fresh milk, and tea bags.
Brewing Parameters
Coffee bean grind size: Medium-fine grind (85% retention on China #20 standard sieve), coffee-to-milk ratio: 1:13, low-temperature steeping time: 8-10 hours.
Brewing Steps
In this article, FrontStreet Coffee used 20g of coffee grounds, divided into two tea bags and tied securely. Then place them in a clean, dry container, pour in 260g of chilled fresh milk, cover with a lid and shake gently to ensure the coffee grounds in the tea bags are thoroughly moistened, then place in the refrigerator for 8-10 hours. After extraction is complete, remove the tea bags/pour out the milk coffee and enjoy. Because milk is rich in nutrients, it's recommended not to store for more than 12 hours after extraction.
「Lazy Version」
Prepare small cartons of fresh milk, prepare coffee grounds in tea bags according to the milk's net content, then place directly into the milk carton, seal the opening with plastic wrap, and place in the refrigerator for extraction.
Should the finished coffee be consumed immediately or refrigerated?
FrontStreet Coffee first tasted the freshly filtered Queen's Manor cold brew milk coffee. It has a rich milk tea color in appearance, smells of hazelnut and roasted peanuts, and tastes mellow, thick, and silky smooth. After being left to ferment overnight, the coffee texture remained similar, but the aroma was noticeably reduced. Considering that milk is a drink that spoils easily, FrontStreet Coffee recommends consuming the milk brew coffee on the same day it's made to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort.
