Understanding Indonesian Coffee Packaging: A Guide by FrontStreet Coffee

Some friends have purchased Indonesian Mandheling coffee but couldn't understand the production dates and expiration dates. Today, FrontStreet Coffee is here to answer your questions! In Indonesia, processed food refers to any food or beverage that has been processed in some way or method, with or without additives. Processed food labeling means any information in the form of pictures, text, or a combination of both regarding processed foods.

Required Label Information

The labels of processed foods must include the following information:

  • Product name
  • List of ingredients used
  • Net weight or net content
  • Name and address of producer and importer
  • Halal food designation
  • Date and production code
  • Expiration day, month, year
  • Processed food distribution license number

If the product is for commercial sale and used as processing for other foods, the label must contain at least the product name, net weight/net content, name and address of producer and importer, date and production code, and expiration date information.

Processed foods may include nutrition claims (nutrient content claims, comparative claims), health claims (nutrient function claims, other function claims, disease risk reduction claims) and other claims (isotonic claims, no sugar added claims, lactose claims and gluten claims) labels.

Detailed Information on Production Dates and Shelf Life

For the production date and shelf life of products, there are actually more detailed divisions:

Processed food labels require production dates and codes. The code can be represented as a batch number. The production date can be printed separately from the code, but must be accompanied by instructions on where to find the production code. The production date can usually be found on the bottom of the can or on the bottle cap.

Expiration information should indicate the day, month, and year.

  • If the shelf life of food is less than or equal to 3 months, the shelf life information should include day, month, and year.
  • When the shelf life of food exceeds 3 months, the day is optional, but month and year are mandatory.

The order of numbers is also day, month, year.

Understanding Date Terminology

  • Best before means the best flavor period.
  • Exp means expiration time.
  • Use by | use before means use before this date, i.e., the expiration time.
  • Production Date means the manufacturing time.

Coffee Storage Tips from FrontStreet Coffee

Whenever FrontStreet Coffee has promotional activities, many coffee enthusiasts stock up on large quantities of beans, including very expensive Geisha coffee and Indonesian Kopi Luwak. FrontStreet Coffee suggests that when purchasing coffee beans, you must check the roasting time. FrontStreet Coffee's coffee bean packaging is printed with the roasting date. Generally, coffee beans reach their flavor peak 3-7 days after roasting (the de-gassing period), after which the flavor will diminish over time. The general optimal tasting period for coffee is 4-30 days. Of course, after the optimal tasting period, it doesn't mean the coffee can't be drunk—it just means the flavor will be somewhat inferior. The general shelf life of roasted beans is between six months to one year. Don't worry! If you have too many stocked beans, give them as gifts to people you like!
