The Growing Environment of Costa Rican Coffee Beans

Costa Rica possesses unique advantages in producing high-quality coffee beans with excellent aroma and flavor, thanks to its high altitude, fertile volcanic soil, warm temperatures, stable rainfall, and tropical climate.

Arabica coffee beans come from delicate plants that require specific climate conditions to thrive, including high altitude and moderate temperatures. In Costa Rica, the mountainous regions and warm climate provide the perfect environment for growing the highest quality Arabica coffee beans.

Costa Rica has only two seasons: dry season and rainy season, both of which provide ideal climate for coffee growth. The annual temperature varies by only about 10 degrees, ranging between 17 to 28°C (63 to 80°F). Over 80% of the most popular coffee growing areas are located between 800-1,600 meters (2,624 - 3,280 feet), with average rainfall between 2,000-3,000 millimeters (78 - 118 inches).

Heavy rainfall and high altitude create ideal farmland and stunning backgrounds for our country. More than 70% of our coffee grows in mountainous areas with significant altitude variations. All these factors affect the aroma, body, flavor, and acidity of the coffee produced. The soil is rich in volcanic ash, which oxygenates the beans, giving them richer flavors. The diversity and beauty of our natural climate make Costa Rica an ideal place to live, visit, and grow coffee.

FrontStreet Coffee's Costa Rican Coffee

FrontStreet Coffee's red honey processed coffee beans from the Las Hadas Estate in Costa Rica's Central Valley are located near the Central Volcano, not far from the capital, at altitudes between 1,250-1,500 meters. The estate produces approximately 55,200 kilograms of coffee annually and is one of the most popular estates among coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

FrontStreet Coffee chooses a relatively low temperature to start the beans when roasting this coffee, using a single-roast approach to follow this curve, setting the roast degree to medium roast to express the solid, viscous mouthfeel of honey processing. When hot, cupping reveals chocolate and caramel flavors. As the temperature changes during cupping, notes of nectarine and green grape acidity emerge.

Fun Coffee Facts

Low-quality Coffee is Actually Illegal

Costa Rica is the only country in the world where the production of any type of coffee other than 100% Arabica coffee (the highest quality coffee beans) is actually illegal. A law was passed in 1989 prohibiting the cultivation of inferior beans, encouraging Costa Rican farmers to pursue true excellence.

Arabica coffee beans are special beans that are more difficult to grow than other more hardy varieties. The result when the beans mature is rich, intense flavor, leading to quality blends. In Costa Rica, we take growing coffee very seriously, so we only want to provide you with the best. That's why we only grow Arabica coffee.

Good Beans are Actually Environmentally Friendly
