Coffee certifications are everywhere—in grocery stores, restaurants, and even offices! Today's consumers have the right to know whether the coffee beans they purchase are certified. Certifications provide various third-party guarantees for consumers. They can demonstrate environmentally friendly agricultural practices and can even achieve organic certification. They can guarantee that coffee production does not involve child labor. Some programs focus more on the prices paid to producers. Certification programs typically have different focuses, and consumers should understand their differences and make personal choices based on product quality and program priorities.

Main Types of Coffee Certifications Summarized by FrontStreet Coffee

Bird Friendly Certification

The only available 100% organic, shade-grown coffee certification developed by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center: Bird Friendly. According to the Smithsonian website, the seal of recognition ensures that birds are protected on the farm. When migratory birds travel from your backyard to those distant farms that produce the beans you enjoy every morning, they will find a healthy haven.

Fair Trade Certification

Fair Trade coffee helps farming families in developing countries live better lives by guaranteeing farmers a minimum price, connecting them directly with importers, and creating long-term environmental management and sustainability. According to the Fair Trade website, "Farmers earn higher incomes, which allows them to keep their land and invest in quality."

UTZ and Rainforest Alliance Certification

UTZ is the largest coffee and cocoa certification program. UTZ aims to make sustainable agriculture the norm by encouraging farmers to implement good agricultural practices and manage their farms profitably while respecting people and the planet. The UTZ certification program is now part of the Rainforest Alliance. Rainforest Alliance certified coffee helps integrate biodiversity conservation, community development, and the implementation of effective planning and farm management systems to support the livelihoods of coffee-growing area farmers and their families. The UTZ organization merged with the Rainforest Alliance in 2018, aiming to create a better future for people and nature and become an excellent partner for our many stakeholders. Since the merger, the UTZ certification program and Rainforest Alliance certification program have operated in parallel.

FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain coffee is Rainforest Alliance certified. Clifton Estate, with its uniquely advantageous coffee growing environment, has achieved sustainable agricultural system standards to obtain certification. Tropical cloud forest certification indicates that coffee bags or coffee barrels with certification marks contain certified coffee products.

USDA Organic Certification

Being certified organic by the United States Department of Agriculture means that farmers growing coffee must use agricultural systems that produce food, support biodiversity, and improve soil health using only approved substances and organic farming methods.
