Introduction to Ethiopian Premium Coffee Regions Yirgacheffe and Sidamo - Brewing Methods and Flavor Characteristics of Guji Coffee Beans
Ethiopian Coffee Regions: A Comprehensive Guide
Ethiopian coffee can often seem confusing due to the vast coffee-growing areas and complex social conditions in the country. For coffee beginners, tracing coffee origins and understanding specific regional information can be particularly challenging. Next, FrontStreet Coffee will provide a simple introduction to Ethiopia, this major coffee-producing nation.
Although Ethiopia has officially registered only three coffee regions—Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Harrar—there are several other common coffee-producing areas. We often encounter many regions such as Guji, Limu, Bench Maji, and others, which are also coffee-producing regions. Additionally, there are micro-regions like Kochere, Konga, and Shakiso.
To facilitate exploration of Ethiopian coffee, Trabocca Company has skillfully integrated administrative divisions with coffee-growing areas on a single map, making it clear and straightforward.
Yirgacheffe
Yirgacheffe is one of Ethiopia's three official coffee regions and needs no extensive introduction. It has three sub-regions: Kochere, Kona Ana, and Waka.
Sidamo
Sidamo is also one of Ethiopia's three official coffee regions and is a very large coffee-producing area. Among its areas, Guji is particularly famous. In recent years, coffee from the Guji region has become increasingly exceptional and valued by professionals and enthusiasts alike, leading many trading companies to treat Guji as a separate region. Coffee from Hambella, Shakiso, and Uraga in Guji are all popular varieties in today's market.
Next, let's explore what Guji region coffees FrontStreet Coffee offers, starting with Hambella coffee. When mentioning Hambella, we must discuss "Horse Champion." In 2017, a natural processed coffee from the "Buku Abel" processing station won the TOH championship, and Chinese green bean importers named this coffee "Horse Champion." At that time, this coffee had rich strawberry and cream aromas. Subsequently, DW company expanded its estate processing stations in Dimtu, the core area of Hambella, to four facilities: "Buku Abel," "Buku Saysay," "Haro Soresa," and "Tirtiro Goye," with an annual coffee production of approximately 1,100 tons. Strictly speaking, among all these estates and processing stations, only the natural processed coffee from "Buku Abel" processing station can be called "Horse Champion Coffee Beans."

In addition to Hambella, Guji also produces excellent Shakiso coffee. Shakiso is a popular micro-region within the Guji coffee area! Located southeast of Yirgacheffe, Shakiso has an average altitude of over 1,800 meters. The fertile soil combined with significant day-night temperature variations provides the ideal terroir conditions for producing high-quality specialty coffee in the region.

This coffee comes from the Uraga sub-region, which is part of the famous Guji region in Ethiopia. Uraga is a sub-region within Guji, with altitudes reaching up to 2300m. Although Uraga town is located within the Guji region, geographically it's closer to the high-altitude mountains of Yirgacheffe at 2200m. The region's geology consists of fertile black soil (Vertisol), and the high-altitude terrain creates Uraga's rich fruit flavors.
Both the Kefa and Limu regions are relatively famous coffee-producing areas that can compare favorably with Sidamo coffee.
The Gesha Village Coffee Estate in the Bebeka region should be well-known to everyone.
In addition, there are other regions such as Kaffa, Tepi, and Godere.
