Outside of tropical and subtropical climates, coffee trees struggle to grow. However, if you have sufficient indoor or outdoor space and a suitable climate, you can grow several coffee trees at home and produce small amounts of coffee beans yourself. A coffee tree takes three to five years to mature. However, the wait is worth it.

Choosing an Outdoor Growing Location

If you live in a hot, humid environment, you can grow coffee trees outdoors. The soil should be deep and porous, allowing coffee tree roots to pass through easily. The planting location should also have some shade and protection from cold or hot winds. Coffee trees are delicate plants, and transplanting them near large trees is a good idea, as these trees can provide protection while the young coffee trees grow.

Indoor Growing

Alternatively, you can transplant seedlings into a large container. Most regions of the United States and all of Canada are too cold for coffee trees to grow outdoors. However, you can transplant seedlings into large indoor pots.

Choose a room with windows that receives at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight daily. The room temperature must be maintained between 60-80°F (15-27°C). At night, it should not drop below 45°F (7°C). The container you use should be large and deep enough.

When growing coffee, the soil needs to remain moist but not waterlogged. Additionally, ensure that both the soil and pot have good drainage for the coffee plant. The humidity around the plant also needs to be maintained at high levels. Placing the coffee plant on a pebble tray filled with water helps maintain humidity. Like many indoor plants, coffee plants require less water in winter than in summer.

Your coffee plant care routine can also include balanced fertilization every two to three months during spring and summer. Remember that a happy coffee plant can grow up to 6 feet tall. Therefore, provide enough space for the plant or regularly prune parts of the coffee plant. If you choose to prune your coffee plant, the best time is early spring.
