It's past three o'clock, time for coffee. Work... work what! Let's have coffee first. No matter how much money you earn, you can't take it with you!
The Struggle with Fatigue
When it comes to fatigue, spring drowsiness, summer tiredness, autumn exhaustion, and winter hibernation are all quite familiar. But when are people not tired? In the end, it's still about staying up at night with our phones, thinking "I can watch one more episode, play one more game"; while during the day, the first thing we think about upon waking is taking a day off.
Today's working people, how could they possibly give up so easily? What problem can't be solved with a cup of coffee? If there is one, then two cups!
Coffee Choices and Concerns
Going downstairs to find a coffee shop is hot and time-consuming, and food delivery fees are expensive. Drip coffee bags? Not as fast as freeze-dried coffee and cold brew coffee. When people with decision paralysis finally decide what they want to drink, another question arises: I've had so much coffee, will I have trouble sleeping at night? What's the maximum amount I can drink in a day?
How Caffeine Works
Nowadays, everyone knows that drinking coffee can refresh because of the caffeine in it. After caffeine intake, it reaches a peak within 30 to 60 minutes. It usually takes 3 to 5 hours for your body to metabolize half of the caffeine, and the remaining caffeine will stay in your body for a longer period. Since caffeine is metabolized by the liver, a person with poor liver function will metabolize caffeine more slowly, with the unit potentially changing from hours to days.
So, why do people feel tired? That's because there are two little players in the human brain: adenosine and adenosine receptors. As adenosine binds with adenosine receptors, fatigue signals are transmitted to the brain, and after receiving such signals, people feel tired.
Caffeine's Effect on the Brain
Reading this, you should understand how caffeine helps all you working people stay alert. That is, caffeine plays the role of a third party in this relationship, interfering with the relationship between adenosine and adenosine receptors. When caffeine enters the human body, caffeine, this "third party," kicks out adenosine, the "original partner," and domineeringly occupies the adenosine receptors. When receptors lead the original partner to the brain, the instruction given is to rest; while when this "scumbag" receptor leads caffeine, the "third party," to the brain, the instruction given is to continue working.
When caffeine binds with adenosine receptors, neuron discharge in the brain increases. The pituitary gland suddenly notices something is wrong and will stimulate the adrenal glands to work, producing adrenaline, thereby reducing human fatigue.
Building Caffeine Tolerance
When you first start drinking coffee, you might feel very alert and worried about not being able to sleep at night. But as you regularly drink coffee every day, you begin to develop tolerance to caffeine. When adenosine receptors are occupied by caffeine for long periods, your body produces more adenosine receptors. Only in this way can adenosine bind with the additionally produced adenosine receptors to transmit the signal that rest is needed.
So, when a working person with a coffee habit wants to stay alert, the usual amount is no longer enough for them. Does this mean that this person is immune to caffeine and can drink any amount without problems?
Of course not. An organization called the FDA points out that for a healthy adult, daily intake of 400mg of caffeine is acceptable. However, this is not absolute. Due to different metabolic rates among individuals, each person's intake amount varies. When you find yourself starting to feel anxious, experiencing rapid heartbeat, gastrointestinal discomfort, headaches, or nausea, that means you've consumed too much caffeine.
There are also no shortage of cases worldwide where excessive caffeine intake has led to death, such as a 19-year-old who died after consuming energy supplements equivalent to 4800 milligrams of caffeine.
Caffeine Content in Coffee
So, how much caffeine is in that latte in your hand? It's actually equivalent to the caffeine content of one shot of espresso. According to the approximate reference values provided in the following table, it's acceptable to drink 3-4 cups of coffee per day.
This table data is estimated based on information from the United States Department of Agriculture National Nutrient Database and manufacturer-provided information, and does not refer to any specific coffee bean variety or coffee brand.
Since the amount of coffee grounds and extraction rate for each cup of coffee are different, the caffeine content of each cup of coffee may also vary. The specific calculation formula is as follows:
Weight of coffee grounds used × Extraction rate × Caffeine content of coffee beans (Arabica caffeine content is approximately 1.2%)
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, relying on caffeine to sustain life seems to be a way of overdrawing your body. It's still important to go to bed early and wake up early to preserve your health. As for coffee, isn't it nice to have one or two small cups normally, just like tasting wine?
It's break time, time for coffee. While drinking, don't overindulge.
