Participants and Auction Information

In the recent competition, a total of 23 coffee producers won COE awards, and all 23 coffees scoring above 87 points will be auctioned online on Tuesday, June 29th. In addition to these 23 coffees, there is also a group of 12 "National Winners" coffees—scored between 85-87 points by international judges—which will be auctioned from June 28th to July 9th.

Regions and Processing Methods

Nicaragua's COE award-winning coffee beans are all produced in the most representative Arabica coffee growing regions of Nueva Segovia, Jinotega, and Matagalpa, comprising 12 different varieties of coffee beans processed through washed, natural, honey, or anaerobic methods.

Top Three Winners

The highest-scoring lot was a Pacamara variety processed using the washed method, submitted by Jesus Mountain Coffee from Nueva Segovia, one of the previous COE award-winning producers. The second place in the 2021 Nicaragua Cup of Excellence went to the honey-processed Maracaturra from El Cambalache farm, also in Nueva Segovia, while third place was awarded to the natural-processed Catuai from Los Pirineos farm. Each of these top three coffees from this Cup of Excellence will be divided into two parts for bidding.

Fourth Place Winner

The fourth-ranked coffee in this Nicaragua COE is the only representative from the Estelí region, a washed-processed Geisha variety coffee submitted by Auxilio Mundial farm, scoring 90.11 points.

Winner's Reflection

"Thank God, my family, the Cup of Excellence, and the staff who organized this competition. All the effort was worth it. Although some growers think this kind of competition is only for large farms, I proved that even small growers like me have a chance in this competition," said Abner Samuel Zavala from El Cambalache farm, the second-place winner of the 2021 Nicaragua COE, in an announcement from the Alliance for Coffee Excellence.
