Many customers arrive at FrontStreet Coffee in the morning with sleepy eyes, saying "I'll have a latte with extra espresso shots, I'm so tired." Yes, many people believe that drinking more espresso will wake them up, but is this really true? This time, FrontStreet Coffee will discuss the caffeine content in espresso.

What Determines Caffeine Content?

The caffeine content depends on the variety of coffee beans. Arabica coffee beans contain approximately 0.8%-1.5% caffeine. Robusta beans contain 1.7%-3% caffeine.

Does Roast Level Affect Caffeine Content in Coffee Beans?

When FrontStreet Coffee was researching materials, we found that coffee professionals had already conducted experiments over a decade ago using the same bean variety with different roast levels ranging from 5-25 minutes, including: extremely light (JQ); light (Q); light-medium (QZ); medium (Z); medium-dark (ZS); dark (S); extremely dark (JS); and French roast (FZ). Through analyzing various chemical changes, they discovered that whether light or dark roasted, the caffeine content didn't change significantly, remaining around 1.4%.

Therefore, the caffeine content in a cup of coffee depends on the brewing method.

Espresso Caffeine Content

Many people believe that a cup of espresso contains more caffeine than a cup of drip coffee. This is actually incorrect. The caffeine content in 30ml of espresso is 64-75mg, meaning a single shot of espresso contains less caffeine than a single cup of drip coffee.

Additionally, espresso is typically diluted with water, milk, or cream to make Americanos or milk-based coffees. A large latte contains 591ml and includes 3 shots of espresso. Calculated this way, its caffeine content is 225mg. In comparison, a drip coffee of the same size contains almost twice as much caffeine.

Drip Coffee (Pour-Over Coffee) Caffeine Content

The caffeine content in drip coffee (pour-over coffee) varies depending on the brewing method, size, and concentration. A 237ml cup of drip coffee contains approximately 95-163mg of caffeine, which is 1.5-2 times higher than espresso! So for customers who really need a boost, FrontStreet Coffee recommends trying our hand-poured coffee made with freshly roasted coffee beans to start a wonderful new day.

Hand pour-over coffee brewing process

FrontStreet Coffee currently uses a blend of sherry barrel-processed coffee beans and natural-processed Yirgachefe Red Cherry Project beans for espresso. Sixty percent Honduran sherry barrel coffee beans provide flavor and body to this blend, while forty percent natural Yirgachefe contributes more aroma and acidity.
