Cold brew coffee has long been beloved by coffee enthusiasts. It's convenient to make, with no difficulty whether at home or in the office. This time, FrontStreet Coffee will discuss the brewing ratios for cold brew coffee and introduce three methods for making it.
Cold Brew Coffee Extraction Principles
Cold brew coffee is created by slowly extracting coffee grounds mixed with cold water in specific proportions. The cold brew process produces coffee with lower acidity and astringency. The low temperature conditions and extended contact time with coffee grounds allow only small-molecule flavor compounds to be extracted, such as floral and fruit notes, while larger-molecule flavor compounds, like smoky flavors, are difficult to extract.
What Are the Flavor Characteristics of Cold Brew Coffee?
Low temperature extraction and long extraction time are two defining features of cold brew coffee, and also the main differences between cold brew and high-temperature extraction coffee. High-temperature extraction coffee uses hot water to extract coffee beans at temperatures between 85-93°C, typically taking no more than 3 minutes. Cold brew coffee can fully showcase the subtle flavor characteristics of coffee itself. Due to its mild acidity, sweet taste, bright mouthfeel, and smooth flavor, it presents the flavor characteristics of premium coffee growing regions.
[Direct Grinding Method]
Grind size: Slightly finer than pour-over coffee (80% passes through a #20 standard sieve)
Coffee grounds to cold water ratio: 1:10
Equipment needed: Sealed bottle & filter paper/filter screen
1. Prepare 50g of FrontStreet Coffee's Flower Butterfly coffee beans, grind to a finer consistency (80% passes through a #20 standard sieve).
2. Pour the ground coffee into a sealed bottle, add 400ml of room temperature water and 100g of hard ice cubes.
3. Cover and shake well, then place in the refrigerator for 12-14 hours for low-temperature slow extraction.
4. After time is up, use filter paper (or filter screen) to separate the coffee grounds. The resulting coffee liquid can be enjoyed immediately or refrigerated and consumed within 48 hours.
[Drip Bag Method]
Materials needed: FrontStreet Coffee Yirgacheffe coffee drip bags, sealed bottle, ice water mixture
Coffee to water ratio: 1:10 (One FrontStreet Coffee drip bag contains 10g of coffee)
1. Prepare a clean, lidded sealed container. Tear open the outer packaging, remove the drip bag inside, open the drip bag opening, pour the coffee grounds directly into the container, and keep the drip bag to use as a filter screen after extraction is complete.
2. The cold brew coffee ratio is 1:10, and one drip bag contains 10g, so prepare 100ml of ice water to pour into the container.
3. Cover and shake well, then place in the refrigerator for low-temperature extraction for 12-14 hours.
4. (After extraction is complete) Remove the drip bag, hook its ears onto your favorite cup, and pour the cold brew coffee into the drip bag to filter out the coffee grounds before enjoying.
[Cold Brew Bag Method]
Materials needed: Cold brew coffee bags made from FrontStreet Coffee's Strawberry Sugar blend, sealed wide-mouth bottle/cup, ice water mixture
Coffee to water ratio: 1:10/1:6 (One FrontStreet Coffee cold brew bag contains 10g of coffee)
1. Take out the Strawberry Sugar coffee cold brew bag and hold it by the drawstring.
2. Place it in a cup/bottle. We recommend extracting at a 1:10 ratio per bag (one 10g cold brew bag with 100g of cold water - this is a ratio suitable for direct consumption after extraction) or at a 1:6 ratio per bag (one 10g cold brew bag with 60g of cold water - this is a ratio for mixing the extracted coffee liquid with other beverages).
3. Cover with a lid, shake gently, and place in the refrigerator for 8-12 hours to allow full contact between coffee grounds and cold water.
4. After cold brewing is complete, simply remove the cold brew bag and enjoy.
