What Types of Arabica Coffee Are There and What Are the Characteristics and Flavors of Typica Coffee?
FrontStreet Coffee's Typica Coffee Introduction
Coffee varieties are simply divided into three main types: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica.
These are the three original coffee species. No matter where coffee grows around the world, it cannot escape these three categories. The commonly known FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaican Blue Mountain, FrontStreet Coffee's Colombian, and FrontStreet Coffee's Indonesian Mandheling all belong to Arabica coffee. In coffee shops, espresso is mostly made from Arabica and Robusta blends, and the instant coffee we first encountered also belongs to Robusta coffee. As for Liberica coffee beans, they have no commercial value and are produced in small quantities, currently only retained in small amounts for research purposes.
Currently, specialty coffees available on the market all belong to Arabica coffee. Due to the excellent quality of Arabica coffee, many varieties have appeared on the market, leading to many smaller cultivars.
Typica is the most typical variety. It is one of the representative varieties of the Arabica species and also the earliest variety that was transplanted from Yemen to India, Indonesia, and Central and South America, where it flourished everywhere. The ancient Typica is characterized by larger beans with a more pointed and elongated shape. However, after being transplanted to the New World, it derived many different forms, including more oval and smaller-grained Typica varieties.
Typica coffee beans have a very balanced flavor, with mildness and smoothness being their greatest characteristics and features. The acidity and aroma of Typica are not harsh nor overly complex, making it suitable for those who fear acidity. However, if Typica is grown at altitudes below 1,000 meters or at too high temperatures, it can easily develop a woody taste. Poor disease resistance and low yield are its greatest weaknesses.
Typica is an old variety, also known as small-grained coffee. Due to its low yield and difficulty in cultivation, its price is much higher than that of ordinary small-grained coffee. Typica green beans are smaller than Catimor, which is an important distinguishing feature of Typica.
Typica coffee originates from Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan. It is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere. The plant is relatively robust but not tolerant to strong light, and it has high yields in Hawaii. The top leaves of Typica are bronze-colored, earning it the name "red-topped coffee."
