FrontStreet Coffee - Nicaragua Coffee Introduction
Nicaragua is located in the central part of Central America, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The north-central region consists of highlands, while the eastern part is a coastal plain, forming part of the Central American volcanic belt. The eastern plains have a tropical maritime climate with high temperatures and abundant rainfall. The suitable climate provides an excellent growing environment for coffee cultivation.
High-quality Nicaraguan coffee ranks among the top in the world coffee market, enjoying a good reputation and being sought after by many coffee enthusiasts. It has medium-sized beans, mild flavor, and is extremely aromatic and rich.
Nicaraguan coffee beans are primarily cultivated with the Catuai and Caturra varieties, with some plantings also growing the Maracaturra variety, also known as Elephant Bean.
Premium Nicaraguan coffee is grown in the northern and central regions of the country. Coffee is the pillar industry of Nicaragua, producing nearly 100,000 tons of coffee beans annually. Many people who have tasted Nicaraguan coffee typically believe it's not much different from Salvadoran and Honduran coffee. It has a rich aroma, smooth and delicate texture, with a slightly bitter aftertaste, reminiscent of the subtle flavors found in wine.
Due to political reasons, Nicaragua's coffee cooperation business with many countries is relatively limited, making it difficult for us to procure these coffee beans. Meanwhile, high-quality coffee beans are often driven to extremely high prices by the annual Cup of Excellence (COE) competition, and many people are unwilling to spend large amounts on them. However, its high-quality Nicaraguan coffee is indeed eye-catching.
Flavor Profile
The flavor of Nicaraguan coffee beans is closer to that of African coffees, with distinct tropical fruit aromas, often showcasing mango and berry-like flavors. Simultaneously, due to the unique topography of Central America, many coffee beans also carry caramel and nutty notes, similar to the texture of dark chocolate. The coffee beans from this region have prominent acidity and smooth mouthfeel, making them suitable for medium-light roasting.
Knowledge Point: Nicaragua has a suitable climate and mineral-rich volcanic ash soil, which provides a unique environment for coffee tree growth.
