FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Nicaragua Maracaturra

Among Arabica coffee varieties, there are hundreds of subspecies that we call cultivars, each possessing unique qualities in terms of flavor, size, color, productivity, and disease resistance. Maracaturra is a hybrid variety resulting from crossing Caturra—renowned for its productivity and balanced flavor—with Maragogipe, famous for its premium quality "elephant beans." Also known as Maragogipe, this variety is commonly found in the coffee-growing regions of Nicaragua and El Salvador.

"Elephant beans are large in size with relatively balanced flavors. Unlike other Central American coffees that typically have bright fruit acidity, they offer a clean taste with excellent aroma, mellow qualities, and a smooth, gentle texture. However, their drawback is low yield. Crossing them with Caturra aims to improve both coffee bean productivity and quality.

Beyond their eye-catching bean shape, Maracaturra coffee beans possess complex flavors that are equally unforgettable. When we taste them, we discover layered flavor characteristics. To use a popular expression, this coffee variety can be described as "big size, big flavor."

However, the cultivation of this coffee variety is not widespread, with few growers choosing to plant it, making it relatively rare in the market. The reason is that this variety is a delicate and fragile plant, susceptible to leaf rust disease. This poses considerable risks during cultivation, requiring growers to invest more time and resources to control the occurrence of leaf rust. Additionally, compared to other common varieties, its productivity is lower. This means that Maracaturra trees produce relatively few coffee cherries each season, presenting economic challenges for growers.

Nicaragua's coffee cultivation benefits from uniquely favorable environmental conditions. The widespread fertile volcanic ash soil, combined with shade-grown cultivation methods, establishes excellent production quality. Coffee from this region features rich body, refreshing flavors, moderate acidity, and exceptionally balanced aftertaste and bitterness, regarded as premium by international coffee connoisseurs. The abundant volcanic ash and shade-grown cultivation methods produce high-quality Nicaraguan coffee with mild, gentle flavors and subtle acidity. Nicaraguan coffee beans are considered among the larger of all coffee varieties.

Knowledge Point

Nicaragua possesses a suitable climate and mineral-rich volcanic ash soil, providing uniquely advantageous conditions for coffee tree growth.
