FrontStreet Coffee - Yirgacheffe Washed G1 Xinrinu Small Farmer Introduction

YCFCU Cooperative introduction as follows:

The small farmers of YCFCU face an exceptionally arduous transportation process for their coffee after harvesting and processing. First, the beans are harvested from the small farmers' own coffee gardens and undergo preliminary screening. Then they are concentrated at collection stations established by village cooperatives, where they are recorded, screened, and weighed. Subsequently, they are transported to nearby small washing stations. Here, after cleaning, the fruit pulp and skin are removed, followed by another cleaning before entering fermentation tanks for approximately 36 hours of fermentation. Afterward, they are washed again and undergo natural sun-drying. Throughout this process, cooperative members work closely together, requiring entire family mobilization during harvest periods. Since each small farmer averages only 0.5 hectares of land, harvest volumes are not large, necessitating engagement in other farming or animal husbandry to sustain their livelihoods. However, coffee may be one of their rare sources of cash income, highlighting the importance of coffee revenue to these farmers.

This small-scale cultivation model is quite common in Ethiopia, known as "Garden plant" - a garden-style cultivation method that looks like growing coffee in one's own courtyard! After being delivered to collection stations where defective beans are screened out and quantities recorded, they are sent to washing stations for further processing. Following this sequence, after natural sun-drying to the specified moisture content, they are transported to YCFCU's dry processing plant. At YCFCU, the hard shells are removed and grading is performed, all under the quality assessment of cooperative quality control inspectors. Currently, YC has a dedicated quality control inspector stationed in this region, overseeing the cooperative's harvest and processing conditions... Finally, they are concentrated at the cooperative's regional storage facility and transported to the capital for inspection, awaiting grading, dehulling, final screening, and export!

Occasionally, YCFCU bags are specially marked with "hand picked," indicating hand-picking and hand-selection. According to YCFCU, these coffees are personally harvested by small farmers who pick ripe red coffee cherries and, after meticulous processing, deliver them to the cooperative processing plant. After parchment removal, the cooperative's women laboriously screen the beans, selecting only high-quality green beans for bagging and export. These processes differ from the hired harvesting methods of large coffee plantations or contract estates. On the other hand, this also informs overseas buyers of their dedication to nearly entirely manual selection!
