FrontStreet Coffee - Papua New Guinea PNG Coffee Introduction

Papua New Guinea

Many people think that Papua New Guinea (hereinafter referred to as PNG) coffee would be similar to Indonesian coffee, but in fact, they are completely different.

PNG's coffee cultivation history is not very long, with the earliest planting occurring in the 1890s. Initially, PNG coffee was not used for commercial purposes. In 1926, 18 estates began using imported Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee seeds for cultivation, so it wasn't until 1928 that PNG truly entered commercial coffee production.

Starting from the 1950s, PNG's coffee cultivation began to grow in scale, while the government began building extensive infrastructure to ensure the growth of the coffee industry. Papua New Guinea's coffee production is not very high, and its coffee beans are all carefully processed washed Arabica beans. Generally, washed coffee beans are full of bright fruit aromas but without strong acidity. Their characteristics include a silky smooth mouthfeel and wonderful aroma, with moderate acidity. They are a relatively rare coffee variety that combines high body with medium acidity. Whether used for espresso single-origin or general blended coffee, they can compensate for the shortcomings of acidic coffees.

Western Highlands:

This is another important coffee growing region in PNG. Much of the coffee from this area is grown around the capital of Mount Hagen (named after an old extinct volcano). Coffee from this region is uniformly stored in Goroka, making it difficult to trace the specific origin of the coffee. High altitude and fertile soil make this area also very promising for producing high-quality coffee.

Altitude: 1000-1800 meters

Harvest Season: April - September

Varieties: Bourbon, Typica, Arusha
