FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panama Geisha Coffee
The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. Over the long years, it remained like a veiled nobleman silently dormant, traveling through Tanzania, Costa Rica, and eventually reaching Panama. After waiting for nearly half a century, it finally made a spectacular debut. The long time did not diminish the preciousness of Geisha; it defeated the perennial champions such as Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica varieties, sweeping the top awards in the Panama National Treasure Bean Cupping Competition in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
In 2007, Geisha won the championship again at the International Famous Bean Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with a bid price of $130 per pound, setting the highest price record for competition beans in history. Geisha belongs to the Typica family, yet it gained fame more than seventy years after leaving Ethiopia. This was a counterattack of a king, and the patient waiting in solitude finally paid off with the most brilliant bloom.
Geisha coffee beans have a jade-like warm texture and a beautiful blue-green color. They smell of fresh grass, peach, berries, and the unique oolong tea milk fragrance that most coffee beans lack. The faint tea aroma is also intriguing. Roasted Geisha coffee beans have a fresh lemon-citrus aroma and a sweet honey-cream flavor.
The floral aroma and intense sweetness of tropical fruits are the consistent characteristics of Geisha coffee. With the appropriate roast level, they create a sensation akin to sipping the fragrance of a fresh bouquet of flowers.
Dry Aroma
Geisha has an uplifting and bright dry aroma, with floral notes of rose and jasmine, as well as the refreshing scent of pomelo and citrus. When lightly roasted, it has a nutty aroma. Other notes include (magnolia, tulip) and other floral fragrances, milk tea aroma, brown sugar sweetness, and even the more sophisticated champagne-like scent.
Wet Aroma
Similarly, it has an orange-flavored wet aroma, with more floral notes emerging. In terms of taste, it is slightly more gentle and reserved compared to the previously uplifting bright dry aroma, with a rich caramel flavor. After cooling slightly, the floral and fruit notes gradually rise as the temperature decreases (sweet preserved fruit, rosehip, orange glaze, strawberry jam, apricot, cherry, hints of pine, vanilla, rose flavors gradually fade, finally revealing lemon-like fruit fragrance). The cold aroma is exceptionally outstanding. The aftertaste has a touch of sweetness, especially in light roast cases, where such flavors test the brightness of this coffee.
Sipping
Rich with the flavor of Lishan Premium Tea, it has excellent oil texture and the sophisticated astringency of high-quality liquor. The lower the temperature, the more delicate the acidity, but it quickly transforms into a smooth and rich body that fills the mouth. The sweetness of candy and spice complement each other, accompanied by emerging floral notes. The floral aftertaste, fruit sweetness, and body are quite persistent.
