FrontStreet Coffee - Rwanda Coffee Introduction
Rwanda has one of the most fascinating coffee histories among East African nations. Following the tragic genocide civil war in the 1990s, the people of Rwanda have moved forward with increasingly high spirits, and the high-quality coffee they produce is inseparable from this resilience.
Rwanda is known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," which is why many coffees are grown at altitudes between 1,700 and 2,000 meters above sea level (MASL). Rwandan coffee can reach world-class levels. They typically have a clean, bright taste that can compete with the best coffees from Central America, offering more balance than Kenyan coffee, with charming fruity sweetness, floral aromas, and tea-like flavors.
Many regions here grow coffee, but most comes from the southern and western areas. Many farms are located at altitudes between 1,700 and 2,000 meters. Coffee grows along the shores of Lake Kivu, from the Gisenyi region in the north to Kibuye and Nyamasheke in the central areas, continuing to Cyangugu. Butare in the south also produces large quantities of coffee. Limited quantities are grown in the north, mostly concentrated in the Rulindo region north of the capital Kigali. Coffee production is also high in the east, but most of it grows at lower altitudes around 1,300 meters.
After harvesting coffee cherries, they are typically placed in water to remove the lighter ones. The depulping process usually uses Kenyan-type disc pulpers, which include a classifier that distinguishes between lighter or heavier coffee beans. Lighter beans are sorted out and sent to secondary hullers and separate low-grade fermentation tanks for B-grade and C-grade coffees. High-density beans are sent to A-grade coffee fermentation tanks, eventually being classified as A1, A2, and A3 quality levels.
