Introduction to Rwanda Washed Bourbon
The Republic of Rwanda is located in east-central Africa near the equator, a small mountainous country in Central Africa. It borders Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. Before 1962, it was a colonial country, gaining independence from Belgium in 1962.
Rwanda began growing coffee beans during the colonial era. The genocide two decades ago left indelible trauma on this already impoverished agricultural country, with many people losing their ability to work. After the civil war, Rwanda intensified efforts to develop coffee cultivation and trade export, providing technical support to coffee farmers and promoting cultivation cooperatives. Through relentless efforts, Rwanda's coffee beans have earned unanimous praise in the international market in recent years.
The beans imported this time come from Mushonyi CWS Washing Station. This coffee processing facility, which has received international organic and natural farming certification, uses scientific methods to encourage coffee farmers to adopt organic cultivation methods to produce high-quality and abundant coffee beans.
Rwanda has the highest population density among all African countries. Since the first export of coffee crops in 1917, this small East African country now has nearly 450,000 coffee farmers.
Each coffee farmer takes care of an average of 150-300 coffee trees, with cultivation areas not exceeding 1 hectare. Internationally, they are classified as small-scale farmers. Since these small-scale farmers cannot afford their own processing facilities, coffee farmers in Rwanda deliver their harvested coffee cherries to the regional Mushonyi CWS Washing Station for processing immediately after harvest.
