FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Pour-Over Coffee Blooming
Blooming is a crucial step in the pour-over coffee making process.
Proper blooming allows the coffee grounds to be fully saturated, activating the coffee's vitality and making the subsequent extraction process smoother. So how can you achieve perfect blooming?
Blooming refers to the preparatory action during the pour-over process, where a small amount of hot water is evenly poured to moisten the surface of the coffee grounds before the main extraction begins.
The Purpose of Blooming
First, to release gases, primarily carbon dioxide, from the coffee particles.
Second, after the gases are released, if the coffee particles can evenly absorb water and become saturated, it allows for more uniform extraction in the subsequent steps.
Several tips will help achieve successful blooming:
1. Before adding water for blooming, ensure the coffee grounds are as level as possible in the filter or filter paper.
2. The force of water during blooming should not be too strong; try to be as gentle as possible.
3. The amount of water used during blooming: generally, 1 gram of coffee grounds absorbs approximately 2g of water. Control the blooming water amount based on the dose and roast level, typically about 1-2 times the weight of the coffee grounds.
(For example: when brewing medium-roasted coffee, 15 grams of grounds can be fully moistened with 18-20 grams of water)
4. During the blooming process, the extracted liquid that drips through should be minimized. When too much extracted liquid appears in the lower pot, reduce the amount of water added or pay attention to the grind size.
There are several reasons why coffee grounds may not expand: 1. The beans have been stored for too long and are no longer fresh 2. Light to medium roasts won't show obvious expansion
