Bourbon is an ancient and excellent variety on par with Typica, and I believe it's the finest subspecies that best represents Typica. Some botanists also believe that Bourbon is a variant that evolved when early Typica was transplanted to Yemen.

Bourbon beans are almost all round-shaped, slightly smaller than Typica beans, and mature later. However, their yield is 30% higher than Typica, though still considerably low compared to other high-yield varieties. It thrives when planted at altitudes above 1,200 meters, where its flavor profile is significantly more outstanding than beans grown below 1,000 meters. However, Bourbon has one drawback: it needs to rest every other year after bearing fruit. Round Bourbon beans possess vigorous vitality and better resistance to leaf rust than Typica, yet their flavor is not inferior - both aroma and body are of extremely high quality, sometimes even superior.

In 1810, Bourbon beans were small and round, mostly growing in dense clusters, resulting in an S-shaped center line. On Bourbon Island, some round Bourbon beans mutated into pointed beans, which became the famous "Laurina Bourbon" or "Pointed Bourbon." Its characteristic is having only half the caffeine content, low yield, weak constitution, and extreme rarity - like a frail, beautiful young nobleman...

Additionally, the biggest commonality among Bourbon varieties is their need for protection from shade trees. Without shade trees to block the intense sunlight, not only is their growth hindered, but the flavor of the produced coffee beans is also significantly diminished.

Laurina was famous in the 18th century, but subsequently, due to a series of disease invasions including leaf rust, this coffee variety was once believed to be extinct in 1942.

In 2001, Laurina was rediscovered on Bourbon Island. Later, through cultivation and restoration by French scientists and Japan's Ueshima Coffee, Laurina Bourbon began to be available in small quantities starting in 2007. Due to its rarity, its market price was four times higher than Blue Mountain coffee when released.

Laurina Bourbon is world-renowned for its "low caffeine" characteristic. The caffeine content of this coffee variety is only 50% of that of typical Arabica varieties, and its chlorogenic acid content is also 20% lower than normal. Due to the extremely low caffeine and chlorogenic acid content, Laurina Bourbon coffee contains almost no substances that cause bitterness in coffee.
