FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Hawaiian Kona Coffee
In 1813, a Spaniard first planted coffee in Manoa Valley, Oahu - today, this location has become the main campus of the University of Hawaii. In 1825, a British agriculturalist named John Wilkinson transplanted some coffee from Brazil to Chief Boki's coffee garden on Oahu. Three years later, an American missionary named Samuel Reverend Ruggles brought branches from Chief Boki's garden to Kona. This coffee is a descendant of the earliest Arabica coffee trees that grew on the Ethiopian plateau, and to this day, Kona coffee continues its noble and ancient lineage.
The unique growing and climatic environment has created the perfect taste of Hawaiian Kona: the flavors of Hawaiian beaches, monsoons, and volcanoes. True Hawaiian Kona coffee offers a unique pleasure, guiding you gradually into a transcendent state of coffee appreciation. This all comes from the most ancient Arabica coffee trees.
Hawaiian-grown Kona coffee beans are among the most beautiful coffee beans in the world. They are exceptionally full and brightly lustrous, with uniform shape and size. Kona coffee beans possess strong acidity and sweetness, with a smooth, mellow mouthfeel and rich aroma that leaves a long-lasting aftertaste. Most remarkably, Kona coffee has a mixed fragrance that combines wine, fruit, and spice notes - as captivating as the colorful volcanic islands themselves.
If you're someone who needs to ease into coffee appreciation by savoring the aroma first, then Kona is perfect for you. Unlike Indonesian coffee with its body, African coffee with its wine-like intensity, or Central and South American coffee with its boldness, Kona coffee is like a woman emerging from Hawaiian sunshine and gentle breeze - fresh, natural, and perfectly balanced.
