FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Panama Geisha Coffee
La Esmeralda Estate is located in the Boquete mountain region of Panama. The Boquete mountain region has an altitude of 1,200 meters, and the famous Baru Volcano is situated right here. The mild climate, fertile young volcanic soil, appropriate rainfall, and diverse microclimates have earned the Boquete mountain region the reputation of being a paradise for coffee. Boquete was developed early, with foreign residents accounting for as much as 15% of the population. The estate owners are mostly advanced international white immigrants who are generally well-educated, highly educated, and have the ability to connect with the international community. They place great importance on coffee quality development. La Esmeralda Estate is a standout among them.
The first owner of La Esmeralda Estate was Rudolf A. Peterson, a Swedish-American banker who purchased the estate solely for vacation and retirement use. He probably never expected that the estate would later become world-famous and even become a representative of specialty coffee. There are two reasons why La Esmeralda Estate is world-famous: one is Geisha coffee, which swept through the coffee world with hurricane-like force. This coffee revolution came on strong, forcing even the long-reigning king and queen of the coffee kingdom—Jamaica Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona—to step aside. The second reason is its repeated record-breaking auction prices!
Panama Geisha Growing Conditions
Panama Geisha grows at an altitude of 1,500-1,650 meters, and its unique growing environment creates its distinctive flavor:
Dry Aroma
Tea aroma, floral notes (magnolia, tulip), vanilla plant notes, milky fragrance, brown sugar sweetness, and premium champagne with an uplifting aroma.
Wet Aroma
Apricot, caramel, milky fragrance, floral notes.
Tasting Notes
Excellent oily texture, delicate Lishan premium tea sensation, premium white wine astringency that immediately transforms into a smooth, refined body filling the mouth.
Berry candy and spice sweetness intertwine, accompanied by floral notes bursting forth. The aftertaste is full of floral aromas, fruit sweetness, and a rather persistent body. The lower the temperature, the more delicate the acidity.
Balmira Estate
Balmira is another brand from La Esmeralda Estate besides Geisha, planted near the Baru Volcano Park area.
Grown at altitudes above 1,200 meters, it has the typical flavor profile of high-altitude coffee from Panama's Boquete region.
Tasting Notes
Sweet, slightly mellow, clean, with rich flavors (vanilla, citrus, honey, chocolate, blueberry, caramel, sweet potato sweetness). The acidity is not too stimulating, with nutty sweetness and vanilla chocolate flavors, making it very diverse.
