FrontStreet Coffee - Panama Geisha Coffee Introduction

The Geisha variety was discovered in 1931 in the Geisha forests of Ethiopia and then sent to Kenya's Coffee Research Institute. Throughout the long years, it remained like a veiled noble, silently dormant. It traveled through Tanzania, Costa Rica, and eventually to Panama, waiting for nearly half a century before making a stunning debut. The long passage of time did not diminish Geisha's preciousness. It defeated the perennial champions Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Typica, and other varieties, sweeping first place in the Panama National Coffee Bean Cupping Competition in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

In 2007, Geisha once again claimed victory at the International Bean Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with the winning bid reaching $130 per pound, setting the highest price record in competition bean history. Geisha belongs to the Typica family, yet it gained prominence more than seventy years after leaving Ethiopia. This was a king's comeback, and the long wait in obscurity finally rewarded with the most brilliant blossoming.

Geisha green coffee beans possess a jade-like warm texture and exhibit a beautiful blue-green color. They smell of fresh grass, peach, berries, and the oolong tea milky sweetness that most coffee beans lack, though the subtle tea aroma is equally intriguing. Roasted Geisha coffee beans have fresh lemon-citrus aroma and sweet honey-cream flavor.

The floral aroma and intense sweetness of tropical fruits—these are the consistent characteristics of Geisha coffee. With the proper roast level, they create an experience akin to sipping the fragrance of a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Dry Aroma: Geisha has an uplifting and bright dry aroma, with rose and jasmine floral notes, along with fresh hints of pomelo and citrus. Light roasts reveal nutty aromas, along with floral scents like magnolia and tulip, milk tea fragrance, brown sugar sweetness, and even more sophisticated champagne-like aromas.

Wet Aroma: Similarly exhibits orange-like wet aroma, with even more floral fragrances emerging. In terms of taste, compared to the previous uplifting bright dry aroma, it appears more gentle and reserved, with rich caramel flavor. As it cools slightly, the floral and fruit aromas gradually rise with the decreasing temperature (sweet dried fruit, rose hips, orange glaze, strawberry jam, apricot, cherry, hints of pine, vanilla, rose flavors gradually fade, finally revealing lemon-like fruit fragrance). The cold aroma is exceptionally outstanding. The aftertaste carries a subtle sweetness, especially in light roast scenarios, where this flavor truly tests the brightness of this coffee.

Slurping: Rich in Lishan Premium Tea flavor, with excellent oily texture and the astringency of fine white wine. As the temperature drops, the acidity becomes more refined, quickly transforming into a delicate and smooth body that fills the mouth. The sweetness of candy and spice complement each other, accompanied by emerging floral aromas. The floral aftertaste, fruit sweetness, and body are remarkably persistent.
