Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Geisha Coffee

Geisha is an extremely rare coffee variety that has been creating sensations among coffee connoisseurs worldwide for more than 5 years. It is considered the brightest, most complex, and intensely aromatic coffee variety.

Introduction

The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha Forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania. Costa Rica introduced it in 1953, and Panama began growing Geisha coffee in the 1970s when Mr. Francisco Serracin from the Hacienda La Esmeralda farm received seeds from CATIE in Costa Rica. Due to its extremely low yield and competitive bidding nature, these beans are considered precious and hard to obtain.

History

In 1931, Geisha was obscurely exported from Geisha Mountain in southwestern Ethiopia (coincidentally sharing the same pronunciation as the Japanese word for geisha) to Kenya. It then traveled through Tanzania and Costa Rica, and in the 1960s made its way to Panama. After nearly half a century of obscurity, it suddenly rose to prominence, defeating long-established champions like Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica varieties. It swept the first prizes in the Panama National Bean Cupping Competition in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2007, Geisha won again at the International Bean Cupping Competition hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), with a bidding price of $130 per pound, setting the highest price record for competition beans in history.

It is reported that subsequent Panama National Bean competitions were divided into Geisha and non-Geisha categories to prevent Geisha from stealing the spotlight from other varieties. Geisha belongs to the Typica family, yet it gained fame over seventy years after leaving Ethiopia, further confirming the notion that Ethiopia is a treasure trove of Arabica genetics. Any variety exported from there can create waves in the coffee market. Geisha is cultivated in many regions worldwide and has become the new king of specialty coffee, with particularly high quality and prices in Latin American countries such as Panama, Guatemala, and Colombia.
