The Third Wave of Coffee
Like the industrial revolution, the coffee industry has also experienced multiple waves, from instant coffee to specialty coffee drinks. The currently popular third wave is — specialty coffee. The level of understanding of specialty coffee has become one of the important factors in determining personal sophistication.
What is Specialty Coffee?
Most people's love for coffee is limited to "specialty coffee drinks" like those from Starbucks, which are based on espresso and mixed with other ingredients, featuring fancy appearance and rich flavors. "Specialty coffee" advocates for purity — it refers to the entire process from "one coffee seed to one cup of coffee." From the cultivation, picking, roasting, and brewing methods of coffee beans, every step is crucial to creating a cup of specialty coffee. Extracted through immersion methods, it's pure coffee when consumed without adding other ingredients, allowing you to indulge solely in the pure aroma and flavor of the coffee beans.
Worth Visiting Specialty Coffee Shops in Guangzhou
Today, let's introduce some worth-visiting niche specialty coffee shops in Guangzhou, starting from Yuexiu District.
Rose Coffee Garden
Rose Coffee Garden has been operating in Guangzhou for over 10 years, located in a green-tree-lined alley on Zhongshan Road. At Rose, there's no menu because they only serve coffee. This serious, focused spirit has made Rose a regular gathering place for many enthusiasts. The shop's self-developed grinder is exceptionally impressive, and the people here are all coffee fanatics. Every time you sit at the bar, you'll absorb new information, and they even offer free coffee when you purchase coffee beans. True coffee lovers will definitely fall in love with this place.
Business Hours: 12:00~20:30 (Closed on Mondays)
Address: 1st Floor, 29 Huiji West, Zhongshan Sixth Road, Yuexiu District
FrontStreet Coffee
Located in the direction from Dongshankou to Wuyang New City, FrontStreet Coffee is a relatively long-established self-roasting coffee shop. There are countless ancient European-style villas on Yandun Road, but FrontStreet Coffee maintains a low profile as a ground-floor street shop in a residential building. With 5 years of history, FrontStreet Coffee has become a popular professional self-roasting coffee shop in Guangzhou, attracting more enthusiasts who come to purchase coffee beans.
It can be said that this is a must-visit specialty coffee shop in Old Dongshan. With one of the largest selections of specialty coffee beans in Guangzhou — Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mandheling, Natural Yirgacheffe... even Geisha coffee and Blue Mountain coffee can be tasted at affordable prices. Highly recommended!
Business Hours: 9:30~21:00
Address: 10 Baoqian Front Street, Yandun Road, Yuexiu District
Liang Zhazha Coffee Shop
Liang Zhazha is the owner himself. When I mentioned that I had been to Liang Zhazha, I found that many people in my social circle know him and say he's a literary youth. Well, this tattooed handsome man's appearance misled me. But it must be said that he is very focused and serious when making coffee, and the shop houses several cats, all plump and healthy, which shows the owner's delicate and gentle heart.
Liang Zhazha must also be a cat lover. To create more space and allow customers to see the three cats, the owner placed the three cat bosses on a three-tier cat shelf — so cute and kawaii! It caused quite a stir among the female customers in the shop~
Address: 554 Donghua East Road (opposite Junyi Building)
Espresso Club
Here there's no flashy decoration, only excellent equipment. No simple meals or milk tea, only focused coffee. The owner here is a coffee enthusiast who truly loves coffee. Order a cup of coffee and chat with the owner at the bar, and you'll often rediscover coffee. Moreover, they make coffee accessible to more people, allowing more customers to experience the charm of coffee.
Business Hours: 14:00-01:00
Address: 90 Yile Street, Nanzhou Garden, Nanzhou Road, Haizhu District
Contact: 020-81003093
Dream House Self-Roasting Coffee Shop
True to its name, Dream House is a place that embraces coffee dreams. The owner says: "I hope those who come to drink coffee here can feel the sour, sweet, bitter, and spicy aspects of our dream journey! That's why we insist on freshly self-roasting coffee beans." This place is perfect for work discussions during the day and casual chats in the evening — very warm and welcoming.
Business Hours: 12:00~23:00
Address: 101, No. 1 Zilong Street, Jiangnan West Road, Haizhu District
APF.KAFE
Considered one of Guangzhou's first "internet-famous shops." During the trend of "minimalist style," APF's interior is predominantly white, with simple decoration and attention to detail. It must be said that this shop's appearance is stunning, making you feel as if you're in Australia. With white as the base tone, the color combination of raw wood, gray, and brass, along with the simple and bright decor style, is very appealing. Various details in the shop are also well done, such as product displays and coffee bean information presentations.
In terms of coffee, APF.KAFE uses a Slayer Espresso 3-Group coffee machine, a Mazzer Rubor grinder, and a Compak R120 for single-origin grinding — truly luxurious!
Business Hours: 10:00-21:00 (Monday to Sunday)
Address: Shop 42, Huakang Street, Tianhe District
HAY Coffee
Hay Coffee is located near APF — a coffee shop that looks low-key yet stylish. The smoking area at the entrance features floor-to-ceiling glass doors and a usable bay window, both perfect photo walls. The long L-shaped bar displays various coffee brewing equipment. The Beatles figurine dolls on the wall cabinet are eye-catching, brought back from abroad by the Hay Coffee owner who studied in the UK — definitely a trendsetter. The coffee beans in the shop are self-roasted.
Business Hours: 10:00~23:00 (Opens at 13:00 on Mondays)
Address: 43 Qiaoyi First Street, Tianhe District (opposite Huayang Primary School)
Contact: 020-29847242
Laihui Coffee
Laihui Coffee operates with the philosophy of "integrating specialty coffee into daily life," providing a place for coffee enthusiasts to deeply understand coffee. The interior features a unified cement gray tone — simple yet sophisticated, as if returning to origins. With "sharing" as the attitude, it focuses on coffee itself.
Business Hours: 10:00~23:00 (Opens at 13:00 on Mondays)
Address: 101, 84 Tiannan South First Road, Tianhe District
Laihui Coffee 2.0
Address: Panyu Zhongcun Metro Station, Tianhe District
A rare "coffee takeout window" in Guangzhou, it once became a popular check-in spot and filled social media feeds due to its white photo wall at the beginning.
Rather than calling it a coffee shop, it's more like a coffee window.
If you look at it from the side, you can only see a circle of "window edges" embedded in the wall that flow with colorful light — very psychedelic.
Business Hours: Monday to Friday 07:30-19:30; Weekends 7:00-19:00
Address: Inside Liuyun Community, 48 Tiyu West Road, Tianhe District (500 meters from Metro Station Exit H)
Sigma Coffee
The shop is very small, with simple and clean decoration. A small shop that only sells coffee.
Espresso / 10 yuan — surprisingly made with single-origin Kenyan beans, truly unexpected. The balance of sour, sweet, and bitter is good. The flavor is predominantly black chocolate, with berry aromas appearing as it cools, with a texture similar to strong tea. The only drawback might be the slightly mixed aftertaste.
WANTOK
In this small shop, I heard the barista is from Papua New Guinea. It's very interesting to watch him make coffee — he even tosses the tamper before compressing the powder. Flat White / 22 yuan — can be considered a qualified Flat White. The milk foam is well-made, but the texture hasn't reached fine and smooth yet. The coffee flavor is rather light, mainly chocolate and nut flavors. The aftertaste is slightly bitter.
Alex is a Papua New Guinea overseas Chinese born in Brisbane, so most of WANTOK's beans come from this island nation in the western South Pacific — Papua New Guinea. High-quality Papua New Guinea coffee has balanced and elegant flavors, higher sweetness, and fruity aromas.
Address: 102-2, 48 Tiannan South First Road (next to the Tiannan South Pedestrian Street archway, in the alley next to Ziyu Ren)
Wuguan Coffee
This should be the hardest-to-find coffee shop in all of Guangzhou, located on Tuanjie Road in Yuexiu District. When I found it that day, navigation pointed straight ahead to the destination, but no matter how I looked, straight ahead was Tuanjie Road No. 4. Where was No. 14? It turned out that No. 14 was hidden behind No. 4, and I had to pass through a door that "looked" like it required card access...
Wuguan is built from a shipping container, with clear water floors and simple interior decoration. The vintage decorations collected by the goldfish owner are also part of the display. The quiet space, combined with irregularly changed coffee beans and enthusiastic, chatty baristas, creates a wonderful atmosphere.
Address: 14 Tuanjie Road, Overseas Chinese New Village, Yuexiu District
Fang Suo Coffee
Fang Suo Bookstore, with its excellent geographical location, is a space I really like, full of various cultural and aesthetic expressions. Fang Suo Coffee, hidden within, also inherits this DNA.
Except for the fact that the menu cannot be photographed, everything else is perfect. Comfortable and polite baristas, warm and calm display space, exquisite yet unpretentious cupware, and very consistently prepared coffee — it's one of my must-visit coffee shops in Guangzhou!
Metro: B1 Level, Taikoo Hui, 383 Tianhe Road, Tianhe District
Fei Zhi Lian Caffe Amore
Hidden in a quiet residential area in Liwan District, Caffe Amore coffee and cake house is located behind a pavilion in a residential community. It's small but very warm and comfortable. Owner Michael is very enthusiastic, and most coffee beans come from Taiwan, selected by Taiwanese roasting master LuLu and the "highly respected" teacher Hu Yuanzheng.
A husband-and-wife shop run by the owners themselves, with homemade desserts where you can feel the care put into making them.
Business Hours: 09:00~20:00 (Closed on Mondays)
Address: Room 1603, 16th Floor, Fubang Center, Zhongshan Seventh Road, Liwan District
Together Coffee
Together Coffee, a specialty coffee shop located in the old alleys of Guangzhou's old city.
Barista Ah Yong said that no matter how good the coffee is, if you drink it alone, no matter how delicious it is, it's still just for one person. So good coffee needs to be shared by everyone. With this belief, the coffee shop is also called Together Coffee, and they're more willing to share the happiness of making latte art coffee.
Address: 4 Kanggong Straight Street, Dongshen Temple, Longjin East Road, Liwan District (next to Longjin Police Station)
GET LAB
GET LAB is a coffee shop in Yongqing Fang, Enning Street. Coffee shops in these old arcade building areas are always delightful.
GET LAB is one of the cafes in Yongqing Fang converted from a Xiguan grand house, preserving the characteristic high ceilings of Xiguan grand houses. A narrow, long staircase next to it leads to the second floor. The main colors in the shop are white and mint green, and the Japanese minimalist style gives this grand house a modern transformation.
Actually, there are three floors. The second floor has a pour-over station, and there's also a small room with coffee roasting equipment.
Additionally, the third-floor balcony deserves special recommendation — on sunny days, this would be the best choice of location!
Address: 12 Yongqing Street, Yongqing Fang, Enning Road, Liwan District
MATE MATE
Guangzhou's MATE MATE, an interesting coffee shop.
The stainless steel bar on the left and the small beach on the right create a strong contrast, perfect for a "pretending to drink coffee in the Maldives" photo series. People were taking photos throughout the afternoon. As the young owners say, this kind of impact proves that fun is the primary productive force.
Imagine what it feels like to move a beach into a coffee shop?
D.O.G
Dog, brought by "Crab Boss," is known as the most lavishly equipped coffee shop in Guangzhou recently.
All the restaurants on Xingsheng Road have a "wow, this looks great" feeling, but passing by Dog still makes marvel at its storefront — it has the vibe of a major Instagram-famous shop.
DOG also sells beer. When you enter, you'll see beer taps. The coffee machine is an ultra-luxurious three-group Synesso, the grinder is a Compak 140 that's even more expensive than an EK, and the bar counter is custom-made terrazzo.
Address: Shop 102, 8 Xingsheng Road, Zhujiang New Town
Press Room Coffee (Hao Ye Coffee)
The story of Hao Ye, a returnee from abroad setting up a street stall to sell coffee, has been told 123,456 times. This time, let's talk about Press Room Coffee itself. "Pressroom" translates to "printing room" in Chinese — a very important production link in the print media industry. This coffee shop with "news" elements is located in "289 Art PARK," which was formerly a newspaper printing plant — the two complement each other perfectly.
Press Room Coffee's yellow facade is easily recognizable. The bulletin board, newspaper menu, and spotlight accents create an innovative atmosphere through the collision of multiple elements. Just like their offerings: Hao Ye salt coffee, soufflé coffee — imaginative creativity that's fun, interesting, and delicious. The key point is that the flavor in the cup is presented only for you.
Address: Under the big tree in the central courtyard of 289 Art PARK, 289 Middle Avenue, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou
Business Hours: Monday to Sunday "11:00-02:00"
COVITA COFFEE
Unlike many retro-style coffee shops, COVITA COFFEE, which uses "Klein Blue" created by French artist Yves Klein as its basic color tone, takes a minimalist approach. The blue and white color scheme is very refreshing, and a large character illustration is posted on the wall — at first glance, you might think it's an art gallery.
COVITA COFFEE not only has an independent roasting factory but also a unique barista artisan system. You can see each barista's profile through your phone. The most outstanding feature is the wide variety of coffee beans here. For friends who want to try different coffee bean flavors, COVITA COFFEE can definitely satisfy your taste buds.
COVITA COFFEE Wuyang Store
Area: Yuexiu District, Guangzhou
Address: Wuyang Store / 93 Siyou Xinma Road (Self-numbered 114, Meihao Plaza)
Business Hours: Monday to Sunday "09:00-22:00"
7-inn Yuyuan Coffee
Founded in 2005 by a Taiwanese owner, Yuyuan Coffee is one of the foundations for the early development of specialty coffee in Guangzhou. From Muzi to now Jeff, many excellent baristas and roasters have emerged from Yuyuan. In today's Tianhe District, where internet-famous coffee shops abound, it seems this established coffee shop hasn't been affected much.
Address: 156 Tiyu West Horizontal Street (near Grandview Mall)
Wupai Coffee
"Great hermits hide in the city" is the perfect description for Wupai Coffee. It's hidden in the bustling Beijing Road area, featuring ancient architecture, a minimalist facade, high-ceiling loft layout, and extensive use of raw materials like wood and cement in its design, presenting a textured modern industrial style.
Wupai Coffee focuses on pour-over coffee. The handwritten menu offers over 30 types of freshly roasted coffee beans for you to choose from. The barista will also recommend the most suitable coffee based on your preferences. Let me tell you a secret — the bar counter is the most popular spot in the shop: you can watch the barista make coffee up close. As for how close, experience it yourself.
Area: Yuexiu District, Guangzhou
Address: 1st Floor, 5 Nanchao New Street, Qiyi Road
Business Hours: Monday, Wednesday to Sunday "11:00-21:30"
Contact: 138-2224-6505
Yi Wai Coffee
When it comes to coffee crossover, Yi Wai Coffee is an industry leader. Yi Wai Coffee is a crossover platform that integrates coffee, gourmet food, exhibitions, and art derivatives. Since opening in 2013, it has held multiple exhibitions featuring works by international and domestic artists and special collectors.
Antique coffee machines and several art pieces are scattered throughout the coffee shop. The eclectic free layout, relaxed atmosphere, and enchanting coffee aroma allow people to feel content even in the heart of the bustling city.
