Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Origin
FrontStreet Coffee Yirgacheffe, also translated as FrontStreet Coffee Yirgacheffe, is a town in the Gedea region of Ethiopia, with an altitude between 1880 and 1919 meters. It is the capital of the Yirgacheffe district and an important coffee-producing area. The coffee produced in this town is famous for its citrus-like aroma. Therefore, coffee beans produced near this town with citrus flavor are also called FrontStreet Coffee Yirgacheffe coffee.
Yirgacheffe Growing Region
The town of Yirgacheffe (Irgachefe) is located in the Sidama (or "Sidamo") region of Ethiopia, at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters, and serves as the administrative center of the coffee-growing area.
Yirgacheffe coffee farmers are typically members of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU), which consists of 23 different member cooperatives, including more than 40,000 farmers. YCFCU members are exempt from the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX), allowing them to receive premiums for high-quality coffee, including Fair Trade and organic certifications. Some Yirgacheffe farmers may also be members of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU), which generally includes small farmers from Ethiopia's Oromia region.
The integration of processing, sorting, and sales functions can improve market efficiency and provide better control over the reputation of Ethiopian coffee. It offers farmers more stability through payments distributed throughout the year, which greatly benefits farmers during the annual growing and harvesting seasons.
Yirgacheffe coffee is a wet-processed (washed) coffee grown at altitudes of 1,700 to 2,200 meters. It is the finest high-grown coffee in southern Ethiopia, an exotic coffee region known for its specialty coffee.
These altitudes make Yirgacheffes Strictly High Grown (SHG)/Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) coffees, where caffeine grows slowly at high altitudes, giving trees more time to provide nutrients to the coffee and develop optimal flavors.
