Legend has it that around 900 AD, a shepherd in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia was herding in the mountains when he discovered his flock competing to eat a type of red berry. After eating these berries, the sheep became unusually lively and energetic. The shepherd worried that his sheep had eaten something harmful and spent the night in great anxiety. To his surprise, the flock was completely safe the next day. This accidental discovery prompted the shepherd to collect these wild fruits and boil them to make juice to quench his thirst. He found this juice to be incredibly fragrant and mellow, and after drinking it, he felt unusually energized. He then began to cultivate this plant, which led to the development of large-scale coffee cultivation. The name "coffee" evolved from "Kaffa." Later, coffee spread from Ethiopia to the entire world.

Introduction to Ethiopian Coffee Growing Regions

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and also one of the world's important coffee-producing countries, producing many exceptional quality coffees. To date, many of its coffee trees are still wild plants, resulting in full-bodied coffee beans with a slight wine aroma. In Ethiopia, you can find various coffee cultivation methods: from vast wild coffee forests and semi-developed lands to traditionally managed small plots and modern plantations - everything is available. Approximately 50% of coffee is grown at altitudes above 1,500 meters.

Famous growing regions include Harar and Jimma, among others. Harar coffee is grown at the highest altitude of all Ethiopian coffees and can be divided into long and short coffee beans, with the long beans being the most popular. It has a soft texture, carries a wine aroma with a wild character, and has a slight acidity that makes it unforgettable after drinking.

Jimma coffee, on the other hand, is grown at altitudes above 1,200 meters and is sold under two brands: Limu coffee and Babeka coffee. Other coffee varieties include Sidamo coffee from the central region, sold under the brand name Yirgachaffe; and coffee with unique flavors from Lekempti. Jimma and Sidamo coffee beans may not look very appealing, but their taste is excellent.

Characteristics of Ethiopian Coffee

Ethiopian coffee is somewhat similar to the famous Mocha coffee. Its domestic consumption is the highest in Africa. In rural areas, it is often consumed with a herb called "Health of Adam": freshly roasted coffee beans are ground together with the herb, then the mixture is brewed and drunk from small teacups. This is often served as an accompaniment to pancakes, as it helps to enhance the sweet pepper flavor in the pancakes.
