FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Huehuetenango

Huehuetenango Highlands

Among the three major non-volcanic coffee-producing regions in Guatemala, the Huehuetenango Highlands are the driest and highest altitude areas. The dry, hot winds from the Tehuantepec plateau in Mexico protect the region's coffee from frost damage, allowing coffee to be cultivated at elevations up to 2000 meters (6500 feet). Due to its remote location, all coffee farmers must process their own coffee. Fortunately, the region has numerous streams, allowing small processing plants to be established almost anywhere.

Guatemala, located in Central America, borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Mexico to the north, Belize to the northeast, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. The Huehuetenango Highlands receive warm, moist air from the Caribbean Sea through the central mountains, creating a cloudy and variable climate. The region belongs to the volcanic zone, cultivating fertile volcanic soil. Combined with its location at the edge of tectonic plate activity, this creates a rugged highland basin terrain. Under such diverse terroir conditions, rich and lively coffee characteristics are nurtured, achieving high-quality Huehuetenango coffee beans. Coffee beans are classified into seven grades based on altitude, with those produced at higher altitudes being of higher quality and more aromatic.
