FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Costa Rica Las Lomas
Whether you still remember or not, I previously wrote about a coffee bean: Costa Rica Naranjo. Today, this bean also comes from the Naranjo Cooperative in Costa Rica, but it has a more specific name. Las Lomas is actually a project name initiated by the Naranjo Cooperative.
In 1968, 98 coffee farmers jointly established the Naranjo Cooperative. Today, it has grown to over 3,000 households, with 95% being small-scale farmers whose planting area does not exceed 10 hectares; approximately 40% of the members are women. The cooperative generates over $12 million annually for the local community.
"Las Lomas" means "hills" and is a project proposed by the Naranjo Cooperative aimed at bringing better benefits to the local coffee industry. The coffee farmers involved in this project are distributed at elevations between 1,300-1,700 meters, covering towns such as Los Robles, Lourdes, San Juanillo, Canuela, and Barranca. This project only collects the highest quality coffee cherries from these regions, which are then processed using the washed method.
