FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Baoshan Coffee
Yunnan Coffee Varieties
The main coffee varieties cultivated in Yunnan are Typica and Bourbon, two classic premium coffee varieties. In 1991, the Catimor series was introduced from Kenya (stronger virus resistance and higher yield), belonging to the Arabica species (also known as small-grain variety). Due to the similar morphology and habits of these two varieties, they are often mixed in cultivation.
The scientific name of small-grain coffee is Arabica, which is a category of coffee with over 100 varieties. Among them, Typica and Bourbon are recognized worldwide as the best varieties within the Arabica species. What the people of Baoshan usually refer to as "old varieties" are actually Typica and Bourbon.
Catimor
Small-grain coffee Catimor is a general term for hybrid varieties cultivated by the Portuguese International Coffee Rust Research Center (CIFC) using Caturra19/IXHDT832/l (HW26) and Caturra19/IXHDT832/2 (H.6). It has now spread to most coffee-producing countries and has undergone further breeding, cultivation, and adaptive variety research, resulting in many different generations of Catimor hybrids and Can-mor derivatives. Some of these exhibit good botanical characteristics and resistance to known rust physiological races, while others are only used as breeding materials. In Yunnan's coffee cultivation, Catimor is a major variety with large-scale cultivation and area.
Yunnan Coffee Growing Regions
The reason Yunnan has become China's coffee-growing region is inseparable from its geographical location. The western and southern parts of Yunnan Province are situated between 15°N latitude and the Tropic of Cancer. Most areas have elevations between 1000-2000 meters, with mountainous and sloped terrain that varies greatly, fertile soil, abundant sunlight, rich rainfall, and significant temperature differences between day and night.
These unique natural conditions create the special characteristics of Yunnan small-grain coffee—rich and fragrant but not bitter, aromatic but not overpowering, with a slight fruity note.
Coffee cultivation in Yunnan is mainly distributed in Lincang, Baoshan, Pu'er, and Dehong. These areas have natural resources of low latitude, high altitude, and significant day-night temperature differences, making Yunnan a golden cultivation area for producing high-quality Arabica (small-grain) coffee.
