FrontStreet Coffee - Brazilian Coffee Grading System

Some beginners who are new to specialty coffee might ask: "What does Kenya AA mean, and what are the differences between Yirgacheffe G1 and G2?" Today, let's take a serious look at coffee bean packaging to understand what these grades represent.

When coffee cherries mature and farmers harvest and process them, the coffee beans need to be graded. The grading standards are mainly divided into three types: altitude, bean size, and number of defective beans.

To better distinguish coffees of different qualities, it's necessary to classify coffee into different grades. Since each country has different climates, terrains, management methods, processing methods, etc., each coffee-producing country has its own grading standards, with no unified international standard.

Coffee grade classification is generally based on defect rate, bean size, altitude, cupping quality grade, or processing standards, among which bean size is more commonly used. Generally, larger coffee beans offer richer and more complex flavors than smaller beans.

Brazil's coffee grading system is more detailed: Brazil uses a combination of three grading methods - defect rate, bean size, and cupping quality grade - to comprehensively evaluate coffee quality. As the backbone of American coffee - Brazilian coffee is famous for its largest production. Because there is so much Brazilian coffee with varying quality, Brazilian coffee is graded by a mix of size, defects, and cupping. Brazilian coffee is classified as YN2~YN8, with no YN1.

Although grading coffee is very important, it's not the only reference indicator. Factors such as coffee roasting, storage methods, freshness, etc., also affect the flavor quality of coffee. Moreover, everyone's taste preferences for coffee are different, so it's best to choose coffee that suits your own taste.
