FrontStreet Coffee - Panama Finca Sophia Geisha Washed Introduction

In 2008, Willem Boot acquired a high-altitude farm from Ricardo Koyner, owner of the Kotawa Farm, and named it Finca Sophia. Sophia is located in the Volcan town of Panama.

The altitude of Finca Sophia ranges from 1,900 to 2,150 meters, making it one of the highest altitude coffee farms in Central America. From the day Finca Sophia was established, Willem and his partners have been exploring the boundaries of growing world-class coffee at extreme altitudes.

The farm is named after "Sophia," the goddess of wisdom in ancient Greek mythology. Its logo design is inspired by a highland pigeon that inhabits the farm (called "Torcaza" in Spanish).

The farm is jointly owned by Willem and his American partner, Equator Coffee Roasters, and is managed daily by local Panamanian coffee farm operators. Before 2008, no one in Panama had ever grown Geisha at altitudes above 2,000 meters. Therefore, even though Willem's team had previous coffee growing experience at the Mule Farm, in the Volcan region of Finca Sophia, the first batch of planted Geisha was completely wiped out between 2009 and 2011 due to the combined challenges of 2,150-meter altitude, high-altitude-specific mold, and strong winds. Fortunately, Willem, whose perseverance far exceeds that of ordinary people, did not give up. After finally seeing hope in two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016, he won the championship in the Geisha Washed category at the 2017 BOP (Best of Panama, the Oscars of the coffee world) competition.

The rich and intense flavor inherent in Sophia Geisha is extremely rare, which is why William decided to use the fully washed processing method to present the complete flavor of the coffee beans. 2017 was the first time Sophia participated in the BOP competition. Due to its complex flavor and high degree of sweet-sour balance, although it was the first time participating, it won the BOP Geisha Washed category championship with an absolute advantage. All international judges unanimously called it "Super Geisha," and the chief judge, Ric (Chairman of the Specialty Coffee Association, SCA), even called it the best coffee he had ever tasted.
