Panama Geisha, driven by the third wave coffee movement, has become one of the most notable specialty coffee beans today. With its unique floral aroma and sweet fruitiness, it has won the hearts of countless enthusiasts, even revolutionizing people's traditional perception of coffee.
La Esmeralda Estate
La Esmeralda is located on the slopes of Baru Volcano, the highest peak in Boquete, western Panama. The mild climate, fertile volcanic soil, appropriate rainfall, and diverse microclimates provide naturally perfect conditions for coffee cultivation.
Remarkable Achievements
To date, La Esmeralda has won 13 championships in various coffee competitions. In online public auctions, it has set three highest bidding records: $21 in 2004, $50.25 in 2006, and $130 in 2007 (per pound). Furthermore, at the 2013 Best of Panama auction, La Esmeralda's natural processed Geisha reached an impressive price of $350.25 per pound.
Geisha Classifications
Among some of the more renowned coffee producing regions and estates in Panama, La Esmeralda's Panama Geisha is particularly noteworthy and is divided into three classifications:
The "Red Label" represents auction-grade Geisha, belonging to the highest grade; the "Green Label" is La Esmeralda's private reserve Geisha; and the "Blue Label" is La Esmeralda's daily production Geisha. Today, we're sharing the Red Label Geisha from Lot 9 of La Esmeralda, which exhibits an exceptionally distinct lychee flavor that truly amazed me.
Lot Designations
Within La Esmeralda Estate, each lot has a specific name rather than just a number. These numbers only correspond to batch codes in La Esmeralda's auctions, meaning this year's "Washed Lot 1" may not necessarily come from the same lot as last year's "Washed Lot 1."
Jaramillo Microclimate
The Jaramillo lot is enveloped by a unique climate formed by humid and cold air from the mountains, allowing Geisha to absorb natural essences during its growth period and develop aromatic qualities. The origin of Geisha's "overnight success" here can be traced back to 1997 when the Peterson family decided to increase the cultivation altitude of Geisha. It is precisely the decreasing temperatures with rising altitude, unique microclimate, and good shade trees that have made this place an ideal habitat for Geisha, endowing it with more delicate and rich floral notes. Simultaneously, Jaramillo has become the exclusive growing area for many top-tier micro-batch Geisha coffees.
