FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemalan Coffee

Guatemala is located in the tropics. The northern and eastern coastal plain regions have a tropical rainforest climate, while the southern mountainous regions have a subtropical climate. The year is divided into wet and dry seasons, with May to October being the wet season and November to April of the following year being the dry season.

The central highlands are also Guatemala's cultural center. Here, at elevations between 1300 to 1800 meters, the temperature is mild year-round, with daily temperatures between 18 to 28°C. At higher elevations, January and February tend to be colder.

The northeastern region receives 2000-3000 millimeters of annual rainfall, while the southern region receives 500-1000 millimeters. The ecological conditions in the south are very suitable for growing high-quality Arabica coffee varieties. What makes it even more special is that several active volcanoes are distributed throughout the southern mountainous areas. These active volcanoes still erupt irregularly today. Although they bring turmoil to the local people's lives, their rich volcanic ash soil also benefits the local coffee industry, providing abundant nutrients for coffee cultivation. Moreover, most Guatemalan coffee beans belong to the Arabica Bourbon variety, so Guatemala's coffee growing areas are almost all located in the country's southern mountain forest regions.

Although the country has limited land area, it possesses rich and diverse climates, as well as numerous volcanoes. Coffee produced in volcanic soil is always rich-flavored specialty coffee. Guatemala's average altitude is quite high, which means that the environment where coffee trees grow has a significant temperature difference between day and night. This harsh environment with large temperature differences allows coffee cherries to grow longer and slower on the coffee trees, resulting in hard beans with more complete and rich flavors.

Guatemalan coffee once enjoyed the reputation of being the world's best quality coffee. The extremely hard beans are known for their elegant and lively acidity, clean taste without off-flavors, distinct layers, as well as green apple acidity, berry fragrance, jasmine floral notes, orange peel aroma, green pepper fragrance, fruit sweetness and sourness, chocolate sweetness, and even a smoky aftertaste. The coffee beans are plump, deliciously balanced, with mellow coffee flavor and quality acidity. Coffee brewed from these beans is pure and rich, receiving high praise, making it the best material for blended coffee.
