FrontStreet Coffee - Colombian Huila Coffee Introduction
Today we're introducing Huila coffee, which comes from the Huila province in south-central Colombia. This region is dotted with volcanoes and has produced many excellent coffees. In 2012, the dormant Nevado del Huila volcano erupted after 400 years, making Huila coffee world-famous. The rich volcanic ash is abundant in minerals, helping coffee develop complex aromas and flavors, nurturing the delicious taste of Huila. It's a black coffee suitable for enjoying the original flavor of coffee without adding any flavorings.
Huila is a coffee-growing region in the southern part of Colombia. The mild climate, fertile volcanic soil, and moderate rainfall allow coffee to grow at altitudes of up to 1,900 meters. Most farmers in this region are smallholders, with coffee cultivation areas not exceeding 7 acres. Huila is not as commercialized as Medellin, Armenia, or Manzinales, and doesn't use as many chemicals to address cultivation issues.
In Huila, SI Trading Company suggests that cooperative farmers adopt biological control methods to manage pests and diseases while maintaining the cultivation of traditional Typica varieties and continuing traditional cultivation practices!
Because Huila is located in the southern part of the country, relatively remote, and the home of Colombia's FARC guerrillas, many traders consider it a daunting area! Only in recent years have people dared to explore this region in search of fine beans. For example, Colombia's coffee production organizations, FNC, and famous foreign trading companies have successively come to this area to directly contact coffee farmers to develop specialty beans! The results include: Condores from San Agustin, Tacama, Tatacoa, Salamina, and SI Trading Company's Ural Gem Huila Esmeralda!
This is a coffee produced by a production association composed of 196 families and 210 members from near Betitelia in the southern part of Huila, Colombia. The average cultivation area of producers in Betitelia is 2.5 hectares, with an altitude of about 1,500 meters. The soil here is slightly acidic, and if the coffee is properly roasted, it will be very sweet and refreshing. The legendary traditional Colombian washed processing method originates from this region, but now to protect the environment, 30% of farmers have switched to mechanical depulping and demucilage, using only small amounts of water for processing.
