FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Colombian Huila Coffee
The coffee we drink today comes in many varieties, such as Brazilian, Costa Rican, Ethiopian, and Colombian. Although these coffees are all named directly after their countries of origin, in reality, every coffee-growing country has numerous coffee-producing regions and coffee varieties. Within these regions, there are also famous coffee cultivation areas and coffee estates, so the names of various regions and estates have become coffee brand names that circulate in the market.
For example, Ethiopia has famous producing regions such as Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Harar. Meanwhile, coffee from Colombia's Nariño region is named "Colombian Nariño" because it originates from that specific region.
This time, I'm sharing with everyone a coffee that also comes from a famous Colombian producing region. It's Huila Coffee from the Colombian Huila region. Some coffee merchants translate it as "Huilan," "Wuila," or "Hula"—all of which are actually phonetic translations of Huila.
Unique Growing Conditions
Because the Huila region has mountainous terrain and coffee is grown on the slopes of valleys, it enjoys high altitudes ideal for cultivating premium Arabica beans, as well as suitable temperatures. The climate of the valley slopes not only prevents cold winds from entering but also provides cooling mountain breezes without high temperatures, and rainfall is relatively abundant. This makes it a uniquely privileged coffee cultivation area.
Cultivation and Processing Excellence
Additionally, Colombian coffee workers manually harvest coffee bean fruits (also known as coffee cherries) by climbing the mountains, allowing them to carefully select and pick the most mature and plump fruits. Furthermore, most coffee beans undergo washed processing. After medium roasting, the brewed coffee has a light and silky texture, sometimes with a slight acidity, unlike the intense flavors of Brazilian coffee and Italian Espresso. In Colombia, it's praised as "green gold."
Quality Characteristics
Therefore, Huila coffee, with its full-bodied texture, relatively heavy mouthfeel, and flavors of nuts, chocolate, and caramel, along with a smooth and pleasant fruit acidity, is recognized as specialty coffee. This reputation is not only due to its uniquely superior geographical conditions and the selection of premium Arabica varieties but also owes much to the careful manual harvesting and selection process.
