Introduction to Typica Coffee Varieties

Arabica has many subspecies, all derived from Ethiopia's most ancient Typica and Yemen's Bourbon after being transplanted to Central and South America or Asia and then undergoing varietal mutations; there are numerous varieties, too many to list.

Typica is a tall cultivated variety of Arabica, originating from the branch that spread from Yemen to Java. It began to circulate on Java Island in the early 18th century. As Ethiopia's oldest native variety, all Arabica varieties are derived from Typica. Typica has bronze-colored terminal leaves and oval or slender, pointed beans; it offers elegant flavor but is physically weak, has poor disease resistance, and yields few fruits.

Typica [Due to differences in English-Chinese translation, some also call it Tiebika, Dibika, or Tipika] is an old variety of small-grained coffee with weak resistance to pests and diseases, low yield, and difficult cultivation, making its price much higher than ordinary small-grained coffee. It originates from Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan and is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere. The plant is relatively robust but not tolerant to strong light. Typica has bronze-colored terminal leaves, giving it the name "red-topped coffee."

Typica branches are relatively thin with larger internodal spacing, so when fruiting, the coffee fruits hang like strings of beads with obvious spacing between each "bead." Typica leaves are small and thin in texture; the fruit is much smaller than that of Catimor.

Excellent estate beans such as Jamaican Blue Mountain, Sumatran Mandheling, and Hawaiian Kona all belong to the Typica variety. Its plant is very similar to what we today call Java, with bronze-tipped young leaves, large fruits and seeds, very low yield, and susceptibility to all major pests and diseases.
