FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to the Kent Coffee Variety

In botanical taxonomy, coffee belongs to the genus Coffea in the Rubiaceae family, with at least one hundred coffee varieties beneath it.

The more common coffees include two major categories: Arabica (with elegant flavors and the mainstay of specialty coffee) and Robusta (also known as robusta beans, with rough flavors, high caffeine content, and not classified as specialty coffee).

In 1911, a coffee tree was discovered at the Dottenagunda Estate in Mysore, India. This tree possessed incredible resistance to fungal diseases. The variety was named Kent (kent) after the surname of the person who discovered this tree. This variety is one of the earliest known leaf rust-resistant varieties. Kent is also a Typica variety. After more than a hundred years of development, Kent is no longer resistant to leaf rust.

The variety takes its name from a coffee farmer involved in a selection program in India during the 1920s, with the purpose of cultivating a variety that could improve resistance to leaf rust. However, if faced with mutated leaf rust, that would be another matter. It's a Typica hybrid variety discovered in India, with high yield and strong disease resistance, but has never achieved good results in cupping.

S798: Also one of India's varieties, a hybrid of Kent and S288, with resistance to leaf rust, widely cultivated in India and Indonesia. Currently, botanists believe it may have gradually lost its disease resistance.
