In botanical terms, coffee belongs to the genus Coffea within the Rubiaceae family, a genus that contains at least a hundred recognized species.

The two species that matter most commercially are Arabica — prized for its refined flavors and the backbone of the specialty coffee world — and Robusta, whose harsher taste and higher caffeine content keep it outside the specialty category.

In 1911, a remarkable coffee tree was found at the Doddengunda Estate in Mysore, India. This tree showed extraordinary resistance to fungal disease, and the variety was named Kent after the planter who identified it. Kent was one of the earliest known leaf-rust-resistant varieties ever documented, and it belongs to the Typica lineage. After more than a century of cultivation, however, Kent has lost much of its original resistance to leaf rust.

The variety traces its name to a coffee farmer involved in a selection program in India during the 1920s, whose goal was to breed a tree with better leaf-rust resistance. Of course, resistance is never absolute — when leaf rust itself mutates, the protection can break down. As a Typica-derived hybrid, Kent yields well and resists disease, but it has never particularly distinguished itself in the cup.

S798: Another Indian variety, a cross of Kent and S288. It carries leaf-rust resistance and has been widely planted in both India and Indonesia, though botanists now believe it too may be gradually losing its disease resistance.
