FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Bourbon Coffee Variety
Bourbon Variety | Species
Originating from Typica. In 1708, it was planted by the French on St. Helena Island (also known as Bourbon Island) in West Africa and expanded from there. Legend has it that it became famous because Napoleon loved this flavor. It has higher yield and growth vitality than Typica, but weak resistance to pests and diseases, and is relatively sensitive to strong winds and heavy rainfall. It needs the protection of shade trees. It is the second most important variety of Arabica coffee after Typica, suitable for growing in altitude areas of 1200-2000 meters. Because its terminal buds and young leaves are green, it is called green-top coffee. According to different fruit colors, it is divided into Red Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon.
Bourbon's flavor is comparable to Typica, with low acidity and smooth mouthfeel. In addition to Bourbon produced on Bourbon Island, Brazilian Yellow Bourbon and Salvadoran Yellow Bourbon are also very famous. The disadvantage is that it needs to skip a year before bearing fruit again.
This name has no connection to the famous American whiskey brand, but originates from the famous French Bourbon dynasty. This variety was initially planted on Réunion Island. After the French royal family occupied the island, it was renamed Bourbon Island. Bourbon has a significant reputation in the world specialty coffee industry, producing coffee with high flavor recognition and sweet taste. In fact, the widespread cultivation of Bourbon beans helps highlight other factors that affect flavor.
Bourbon variety coffees produced in different regions around the world have a wide range of cupping quality characteristics. Over time, the Bourbon variety itself has been sublimated and has produced many genetically mutated varieties. Red Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon, and Orange Bourbon are its main mutant varieties. Bourbon produced in Rwanda is significantly different in taste from Bourbon batches produced in El Salvador.
Bourbon coffee beans are oval in shape and relatively small!
